Treatment Options for Brown Spots

Linda M. McCloud

Yes, brown spots, also known as age spots can be caused by growing older. They usually begin appearing by middle age. Yet, they can be caused by reactions to medications, health conditions and even adverse reactions from being out in the sun too long. However, how should you treat these spots when and if they appear?

There are a number of treatment options for brown spots. These treatments are used to lighten the appearance of these spots.

Brown Spot Skin Treatments

These are generally creams that claim to lighten the spots. Some of the most common ingredients in these treatment formulas include:

  • Hydroxy Acids
  • Glycolic Acid
  • Retin A
  • Vitamin C
  • Vitamin E
  • Green tea
  • Aloe Vera
  • Antioxidants

Chemical Peels

Chemical peels can be used to help remove and treat these spots. A chemical peel will help remove the surface layer of one's skin through the use of acid. The acid is a safe type that won't cause any permanent harm. However, it will peel away dead, surface skin cells, which in turn will help lighten the appearance of the spots.

Laser Therapy

Laser therapy is the quickest and easiest way to remove any type of spot from the skin. A laser is applied through a beam of light onto the area. This beam is very intense and will work to remove the affected area. In this case, it will work to remove the brown spot. It is also painless. Generally, 70 percent of all age spots can be removed through laser therapy.

Home Based Therapy

Yes, there are some home based therapies or remedies that may work to lighten these spots. These include:

  • Applying a mixture of lime juice mixed with yogurt onto the area
  • Applying apple cider vinegar that has been diluted with water onto the area
  • Applying castor oil onto the area
  • Placing a lemon onto the area for 15 minutes a day

Of course, if you want the best advice on how to get rid of any brown spots you may have, consult your physician or dermatologist.

Thanks for the tips. I only have one, and it is from long hours out in the sun.
