The first suggestion should be the most obvious, and that is, if you are a smoker, to quit immediately. When you already have a pulmonary disease such as COPD, there is no need to further complicate it. In fact, patients who quit smoking can experience an improvement in the functioning of their lungs.
A further treatment is the use of a maintenance inhaler. These inhalers are used on a daily basis to help hold COPD at bay. They can enhance breathing and can last for up to 24 hours. An additional treatment is an emergency inhaler that is used in much the same way as an asthma inhaler, at times when you are immediately short of breath.
If you are overweight, losing weight will not only improve your entire body, but it will also help reduce the load your body places on your lungs. Overweight people become winded easily which can trigger problems. A doctor should be able to provide you with a weight loss program that will yield results without aggravating your condition.
Even if you are already in okay physical shape or have a slender build, talking to your doctor about an exercise program is still a good idea. Not only will this help manage your COPD to an extent, but it will also help prevent other problems from popping up as you move through life.
When there is a particular set of circumstances that causes you breathing difficulty, it is important to avoid this situation as much as possible if not entirely. For instance, if you find that common allergens such as pet hair or dander can bother you, do not visit friends with pets in their house. This will ensure that a common allergy reaction such as sneezing doesn't lead you down a more serious path.
Your doctor can provide you with more information on a host of additional COPD treatments that include bronchodilators, oxygen therapy, pulmonary rehabilitation, lung transplants, and the use of antibiotics. The options presented in this article on treating your COPD can serve as excellent conversation starters and discussion points at your next doctor's appointment.
