Tree House Commodity

Timber for Tourists

In the Pacific Northwest, nestled between the Redwood Forest and the Oregon Caves National monument is a remote corner in Oregon that has stands of timber worth more money than any timber ever logged in any forest or rain forest on planet Earth. You might wonder if it's a new species of fast growing super wood. But it's nothing like that. What if I told you the timber isn't harvested and that by preserving the trees their monetary value is greater than the milled lumber they would otherwise become. It's the people living in this Southern Oregon paradise, that have made the trees so valuable; by creatively marketing their resource.

It was late November, that I found myself amidst the damp, moss ridden ground with the electric smell of fresh rain lingering in the misty air. Phil Moskios, the owner of Vertical Horizons Treehouse Paradise, looks back at me as I try to keep up. I had to stop and marvel at the state of the art tree house suspended some forty feet above me. "We designed this one after a Chinese lantern," Phil said. The Shiitake tree house hangs from beams that run straight through the tree and the tree goes through the center of the tree house. After exploring the Shiitake, we made our way toward their newest creation; a Tudor style tree house called the Calypso, which is pure class. Further up the path is the Cottage. Nothing could have prepared me for the rush of childhood memories I experienced when walking in. "This was our first, it finished about four years ago; they take a long time to get done, or at least mine do," Phil's pride shone through.

If you ever get to visit, you will understand why. The remarkable craftsmanship and special touches make these tree houses stand out, and the hospitality was more than perfect, sublime to be more accurate. This tree house concept has novelty that offers travelers a unique experience using what would otherwise be defined as a resource; a one time pay off when logged now provides long term income. The majority of our population lives in a place the trees are all planted, water comes out of a faucet, and sand is in a box. Do you live near a river, lake or perhaps sand dunes? Suppose you could put your backyard to use and make money preserving what ever Mother Nature has set in front of you. If you have water how about a Well House, Water Wheel House, or Light House. If you have sand think about Sand Castles, Arabian Tents, and ATV Trails. Make the most of what you have in your area. Create jobs for the kids so they can have a place to live and prosper. All kinds of resources promise to generate returns far more valuable than any dollar earned off a one time sale.

One of the many colorful guests that have stayed at Vertical Horizons Treehouse Paradise is a concerned arborist, Richard Maxwell, the owner of 'Tree Savers' in West Palm Beach, Florida. He wrote in the guest book located inside one of the tree houses', -"Phil, touch your trees."-

This echoes the fundamental reason for success. Living alongside trees is an approach man has yet to embrace. Trees are the true keepers of history and these sentient beings will live to see many generations to come. Harvesting them kills our ancestry as well as compromises our basic needs as humans. For survival we depend on the biosphere which the few overburdened trees support. Drought, fire, poor government policies raping once protected forestlands are some of the reasons trees have become weak and susceptible to disease and beetle infestation.

Separation from nature occurs when the media harnesses our minds with fear, clouding our view of the world; but in a tree that all blows away with the wind and we are free to create a new reality. We really do have the power to change our environment without harming the economy. Save your trees, share them, or go visit some in Southern Oregon. Because all trees are one; your wealth of gratitude will flow to trees everywhere and help strengthen their ability to preserve the biosphere. Share whatever life giving resource you have; allow the healing properties that inhabit all Mother Natures gifts to benefit all the creatures of the world.
