My husband and I used creativity that first year to decorate our homely tree. Over the past 15 years, the decorations on the tree have grown -- in large part due to the handmade ornaments the kids always make at school -- but we still have the same Christmas tree, which we tuck away in a box after each New Year's. I always say I'm going to get a new tree (one of those fancy ones with the lights already attached), but each year the sentimental value of our tree, prevents me from buying a new one.
There are many ways to decorate a Christmas tree on a tight budget, and, believe me, we have tried them all.
Although you may not think so, food can be very pretty on a Christmas tree. Strings of popcorn or cranberries can be strung in a way that's appealing. Well-tucked oranges and lemons can also be beautiful, depending upon the other decorations on the tree.
Other items found in nature also lend themselves to beautiful tree trimmings. Pinecones can be used as is, or sprinkled with glitter for a more elegant look. Sprigs of holly or garland can also be woven throughout tree branches.
Children naturally love coloring and decorating, and they love bright colors. Allow your children to decorate the tree themselves, using anything they can find -- from construction paper streamers to hand-made ornaments. A tree done completely in white paper snowflakes (with all white lights) is absolutely gorgeous, and each child can add his/her own unique snowflakes to the tree. Add silver glitter to the white snowflakes, for an even greater effect.
Speaking of lights, a tree with many, many lights and little or no ornaments can be elegant. Just purchase several strings of lights (all the same color) and tuck them behind every single branch.
If your budget is a little higher, consider your local dollar store. For only a dollar, you can find a variety of tree trimmings inlcuding bows, ornaments, garland, and lights. You can easily decorate a tree for under $30.
Lastly, think ahead. What Christmas trimmings are on your list for next year? Make a list, check it twice, and then shop the day after Christmas when items go on sale for 50 to 75-percent off and more.
