Trends in the Technology Industry

To say that we are moving from personal computers to tablets with the advent of the iPad would be an incorrect statement to make as there are a number of users who would still like to stick to their personal computers. However, in recent times, a spate of inventions and apps have certainly shaken up the technology industry. They have led to ever innovating software and have led to a set of new experiences for the user.

I remember using http://www.snapfiles.com both in its present avatar as well as in its earlier version, Web Attack to find softwares that often were not featured on CNet or ZDNet. I still use sourceforge sometimes to find some great applications.

There is a very interesting website called Giveaway of the Day
which gives you the latest software free every day. Its a very interesting concept.

There's also the ubiquitous Nokia Maps that became a runaway hit in markets like India and South Asia. Nokia Maps was one of the first such applications in South Asia that helped the rush towards smaller devices, be they mobiles, handhelds or later tablets. It is also the first software that helped people in a real time way. In India, in most places, newcomers would certainly have problems finding directions and Nokia Maps was a great help.

You can also find great trends about technology on Techcrunch and Endgadget

There are also a number of applications that have come up specifically for Twitter and with Twitter making profits, they aren't going away very soon. One such software is archive tweets to pdf + offline browsing at Source Forge.

I think looking at the technology industry no clear trend emerges. I would not say that there is a clear preference for ipods or ipads or tablets but yes, there is a shift towards smaller devices such as smartphones, handhelds, laptops.
