1. Two-For-One Names
By this they mean pairing a "proper-sounding name" with a "lighter-than-air, even silly nickname". Examples they give are Beatrix Lulu and Abraham Bunny. The craziest part of this is that they're serious. I'm doubting that this will emerge as the number one baby naming trend for 2011.
Verdict: Crazy
2. Focusing on Nicknames
I could see this. Most baby name books tell you to consider nicknames when naming a baby, so using a nickname as a starting point makes sense. If you like the name Will, possibilities for a full name include William, Wilford, Willam, Wilkinson, or Willard.
Verdict: Sane
3. Dog Names for Babies
Again, the craziest part of this is that they're serious. I highly doubt the roll call of the 2016 kindergarten class will read: Lucky, Blackie, Spot (OK, no one names their dog Spot anymore). Mom Logic suggests Buddy and Buster will be top names for 2011. They go on to say that this is a trend inspired by the movie "Marley & Me". Evidently, they've forgotten that Marley is a people name that was given to a dog.
Verdict: Crazy
4. Names Beginning with "Ha"
Mom Logic cites "Hayden, Harry, Hazel, Harrison, Harper, Hadley, Hank, Haven, Hal, Hart, Harriet, Hattie, Hale, Harley, Hartley, Harlow" as "Ha" names that are trending. This could actually happen.
Verdict: Sane
5. The Latin "-us" for Boys, Replacing -en and -er
Their examples are Aurelius, Augustus, Cassius, Maximus and Amadeus. I'm on the fence on this one. If the boys end up being called Ari, Auggie, Cassie, Max, and Maddy I could see it.
Verdict: (Comparatively) Sane
6. Calendar-Inspired Names
Calendar inspired names have been around forever. Think of Louisa Mae Alcott, June Cleaver, and Tuesday Weld. Calendar-inspired names are meaningful and have the right balance between between being too common and too outlandish. I can see this trending in 2011.
Verdict: Sane
7. "Comeback" Names
By this they mean names like Stanley, Ernest, Harvey, Arthur, Walter, and Warren. I do see these names coming back. However, I don't see pairing these names with middle names like Fluffy and Socks, as suggested in trend numbers one and three.
Verdict: Sane
8. Androgynous Names
Yesterday's Pat, Terry, and Chris get replaced by 2011's Sasha, Peyton, and Sawyer. As much as I have a personal distaste for androgynous names, I think this is going to trend.
Verdict: Sane
9. Exotic Flower Names
Flower names will always be around. (Who doesn't have an Aunt Rose, right?) The projected trend for 2011 is that the flower names go beyond Lily and Daisy into Azalea, Poppy, Marigold, and Dahlia. I can see some girls being named after exotic flowers, but I don't think it'll be a major baby name trend in 2011.
Verdict: Crazy, with a side of sanity.
10. Boys Names Starting with "R"
This one has got me stumped more than anything else. "R"? I just don't know.
Verdict: Crazy, because I think they randomly picked a letter.
11. Boys and Girls Names Starting with "O"
Olivia, Owen, Orson... yep, that really could be a kindergarten roll call. "O" names have been popular for a while now and I don't see any signs of them slowing down.
Verdict: Sane
12. Names Inspired By Heavenly Objects and Creatures
Mom Logic claims that the names Mars and Jupiter will trend in 2011. I don't think enough parents will name their children after planets to make it a national trend.
Verdict: Crazy
13. Dexter
A direct quote from Mom Logic: "Most improbable TV character-inspired name: Dexter". Perhaps they've forgotten the definition of trend.
Verdict: Crazy
14. The DECLINE of "Vampire" Names
Mom Logic thinks names "like Bella, Edward, Cullen, Emmett, Jasper, Esme and Felix may be approaching a downturn". Sorry, I can't agree with this. Vampire movies and books are still red-hot, and parents like to use names from popular culture. We're going to see a lot of "Vampire" names in 2011.
Verdict: Crazy

Post a CommentVery interesting! Some of these I really like, while others... ah well... :)
I like names that are unique but not crazy! Parents please remember your child is a person and will have to live the rest of their lives being called by their name, so please be responsible!
Interesting article!
So Rory, Rick and Rudolph have a chance now!
Liked this a lot! My 2nd grandson Aiden Joseph will arrive 1/19/11!
Who the heck do they have analyzing the trends? Most of this doesn't make ANY sense. Very interesting read though! Thanks for sharing! Also, I have an aunt violet, and my gramma is nicknamed Ginger, but her real name is Virginia. But seriously, these trends are well, not going to be trends. At least I hope not!
Very fun read!!!
My husband's name is Rexton. We obviously call him Rex. His parents added the "ton" to avoid the correlation with the obvious - - a dog name. I don't think it really worked.
Very interesting! I like all the H names. But Lucky? Fluffy? That's worse than Dweezil and Moon!
Whatever happened to nice, normal names?
