Trent Reznor: Where is He Now?
Nine Inch Nails May Be Taking a Break but How to Destroy Angels is Releasing Their First EP
Reznor hails from Mercer, Pennsylvania but now lives in Los Angeles. His career as a musician has held ups and downs and everything in between. Originally, the Nine Inch Nails front man, was in a marching band and played in the jazz band at his high school. He soon moved on to a small band called Option 30 while attending college. After he dropped out of college, he moved to Cleveland, Ohio and joined the band, The Innocent. Only one album was released with Reznor as the keyboardist before he quit the band after being with them for 3 months. Soon he joined the local Cleveland band, Exotic Birds, and was also part of a fictional band called "The Problems".
While Reznor was searching for his place in music he was also looking for a job. A janitor position at Midtown Recording (formerly known as Manhattan's Right Track Studio) placed Reznor's foot in the door enough for him to open up a world of possibility. Using his free time from work and the times that the recording studio was not being used, the first demos of his music were created.
Every instrument on Reznor's demo was played by him save for the drums. The demo tracks were released unofficially on the album, Purest Feelings, in 1988. These songs later appeared on Nine Inch Nails debut album, Pretty Hate Machine, which was released in 1989. Reznor's name made a mark on music with his creation of the Industrial Rock Project.
Since its birth, Nine Inch Nails (NIN), over 8 studio albums were produced include The Downward Spiral, With Teeth, The Broken (an EP) and Year Zero. The Downward Spiral was NIN's second full length album and is still the highest selling album from Nine Inch Nails to date. Over 20 million NIN albums have been sold around the world, over 10 million of those sales coming from the United States.
Reznor's career ups and downs included a stint in rehab, a brief experience living in the home of the Manson Family Murders, a lawsuit with John Malms Jr. (Reznor's former manager), and multiple awards for his music. He was involved in activism for PETA against the Chinese fur trade, fought many corporate feuds and was considered one of America's "most influential people" by TIME magazine.
In 2009, Reznor left a message on the official Nine Inch Nails message to his fans, "I've been thinking for some time now it's time to make NIN disappear for a while."
It was a very short disappearance. How to Destroy Angels released their debut EP as a free download on the NIN website on June 1st. The CD version will hit stores on July 6th. A vinyl album is TBA. How to Destroy Angels is made up by Trent Reznor, his wife Mariqueen Maandig and Atticus Rose. Visit How to Destroy Angels official website to view the video of the song, The Space In Between.
