Triangle Square Gay and Lesbian Affordable Retirement Housing of Los Angeles

A Viable Retirement Housing Option for Low-Income LGBT Seniors

Rachelle Lynn Williams
Gays and lesbians sometimes have special concerns when it comes to housing. There are no federal housing laws to protect lesbian, gays, bisexual, and transgendered persons (lgbt), and discrimination is a high probability.

There is an affordable housing crisis all over the United States, and elderly gays and lesbians are at greater risk because of their sexual orientation.

The goal of Gay and Lesbian Elder Housing (GLEH), is to assist the Los Angeles area lgbt community, by providing affordable retirement housing and supportive services to lgbt seniors with low income.

GLEH is the first of its kind in the United States, and the organization strives to be a model gay and lesbian affordable housing retirement development for other lgbt organizations to follow; Triangle Square is GLEH's flagship community.

Triangle Square Location and Physical Makeup

Triangle Square is located in Hollywood, at the intersection of Selma and Ivar Avenue. The Hollywood Farmer's Market is nearby, and the Hollywood & Vine Los Angeles Metro Station is a short distance away. Downtown Los Angeles is a little over a 10 minute jaunt by public transportation.

The exterior of the $21 million dollar development is a beautiful modern structure. It is richly colored with hues of tan, and slate gray, and it has a mammoth steel accented entrance.

The interior is stunningly gorgeous, with rich, warm colored common areas. Individual apartment are beautifully appointed, with European cabinetry, wall-to-wall carpeting, fully equipped kitchens, airy balconies, and each unit is pre wired for cable and telephone services.

The urban building consists of 96 one bedroom and 8 two bedroom units. There is a breezy, open courtyard with a pool, and located on each floor, there are nicely designed lounge areas and laundry facilities.

GLEH Supportive Services

According to administrators at Gay and Lesbian Elder Housing, there are currently 75,000 senior gays and lesbians in the greater Los Angeles area. Many of these individuals may feel "left out" due to family abandonment because of their sexuality and discrimination from the mainstream population.

In addition to affordable housing, GLEH also offers supportive services, such as counseling, senior lgbt support groups, food assistance programs, financial guidance and budgeting tips, public aid eligibility assistance, recreational and arts and culture opportunities, and HIV/AIDS related support.
