Trick or Treat for Charity

Instead of Trick or Treating for Candy, Why Not Trick or Treat for Charity?

Shannon Wilson
If you don't like the idea of your children taking candy from strangers on Halloween, why not have them trick or treat for charity instead? That way, your kids would still get a chance to have some fun on Halloween and help out charities in the process. Trick or treating for charity is also good for children who are diabetic or have food allergies.

Trick or Treat For Charity Idea #1: Unicef

Probably the most thought of trick or treat for charity idea is Unicef. Unicef has been doing the trick or treat for charity for decades. The bright orange collection box for coins are widely recognized. You can request the boxes from the Unicef web site. If you don't have enough time to request one, you could always make your own. Uncif stands for the United Nations Children's Fund and the money you collect on Halloween would be used to help Unicef fight for children's rights, development, survival and protection.

Trick or Treat For Charity Idea #2: Sight Night

Sight Night is in it's 10th year of collecting for charity. Instead of collecting cash, Sight Night wants you to collect people's old eyeglasses. The eyeglasses that you collect are repaired, cleaned and delivered in person to people in third world counties that are not able to get glasses of their own. You can request a free kit from the Sight Night web site or even print out your own materials for the kit. Since starting, Sight Night has collected over 1,000,000 pairs of eyeglasses. That's a pretty impressive number!

Trick or Treat for Charity Idea #3: Trick or Treat for Food Allergy

FAAN uses the money made from trick or treaters for food allergy education and research programs. Last year they earned more then twenty thousand dollars on Halloween from trick or treaters! You can request up to 6 trick or treat boxes online. If you've trick or treated for FAAN before, they will automatically send you a kit this year. FAAN also offers children a chance to win prizes at their web site for participating.

Trick or Treat for Charity Idea #4 Trick or Treat for canned donations

Instead of signing up with a charity, you could collect cans of food on your own to give to your local homeless shelter or church pantry. Before you go, make sure you're decided on where you will be donating the cans of food to so you can tell people why you're collecting and who you're collecting for. When you take your kids to trick or treat door to door for canned food, you might want to take a children's wagon to put the cans in, otherwise you may end up with a full and heavy load.

Trick or Treat for Charity Idea #5: Trick or Treat for the Red Cross

The Red Cross does not officially have an trick or treat kit or anything like that but you could make up your own kit easily. The Red Cross always helps people in the time of disaster so why not give a little something back? You could trick or treat for change and dollars that you could turn over to the Red Cross after Halloween.

Whatever charity you have your kids trick or treat for, I think that it will be a rewarding experience for the entire family. Not only will your kids help people but they'll feel good about doing it.
