Tricks of the Trade When Shopping Goth

Dark. Sinister. Foresaken by society. These are the adjectives goth kids would use to describe themselves. So, when trying to go out and buy any type of clothing item or accessory for a goth teenager, don't make the mistake and buy them anything that would suggest they are shiny, happy people .... because they are not. Goth is who they are and who they want to be. When buying for them, it is up to parents to compromise because their is no way a goth is going to.

First things first, when buying for a goth kid, black is not always good. True, black is the quintessential color for the goth wardrobe but message, themes and appearances are the crux of what it is all about. A lot of people have the impression that all goths simply want is to come off as mutants, and while that is true with some, others find it important to look goth, but distinguished as well. It all depends on their personality and style. Yes, I said style. Some would rather dress up like the Mad Hatter rather than the Angel of Death. It is a subculture all its own and it is a devout lifesytle.

A few of the more generic places to start when it comes to shopping for goth kids are stores like Hot Topic, Torrid and Lip-service.com. Be forewarned, if you do plan to purchase an item from Hot Topic, be prepared, your teenager may sniff it out like a bloodhound and claim that it is too mainstream and that it is not decadent enough. These stores will provide most parents with the "starter's kit" for goth attire and memorabilia but you have to submerge yourself in their thinking to impress them. You may be able to come up with some clothing items at Spencer's gifts as well but once again you'll have to be on your game to come up with a goth kid will appreciate. At these stores you may be able to find shirts that appeal to the mindset or endorse some of the bands that fall into the appreciation of goth enthusiasts. Most of these store have a lot of the boots, belts, piercings and other items that could compliment some of the goth rags but the best advice would be simply to educate yourself. Understand that what is "not in" is fashionable to goth and with is hideously remorseful to look at, may just be right up their alley.

The best way to understand how to shop for a goth teenager is simply to ask them. You may not like what you hear but in many circumstances, you won't be able to come up with the answers on your own. You may end up being able to find the un-perfect outfit in the clearance rack at Macy's or at some hole-in-the-wall thrift store. Some of the make-up that goes with the attire may be found at $1 stores. You may be able to get off buying goth items really cheap. You never know. Inevitably, goth kids will continue to develop a style all by themselves and the responsibility is simply up to the parents to try and make sense of it all.
