Trimming Your Cat's Toenails

Patience is the Key

Vonnie Kennedy
Do you dread trimming your cat's nails as much as little Muffin hates having them done? Has it turned into a traumatic experience for both of you? Maybe it's time for a different tactic. The most important ingredient is patience.

Before you even attempt to trim his nails, you need get Fluffy (or in my case, Duffy) used to having his paws touched. Press gently but firmly on the pad area to extend a claw. Examine where the claw comes out of the quick. Always clip below the quick even if you just get the tip of the nail the first time.

What:

  • Human toenail clippers
  • Lighted area
  • Treats
  • Sleeping kitty
  • Patience
Where:
Cats usually have a couple of favorite sleeping spots. Choose the spot with the best lighting. If you are lucky enough to have a lap cat, sit near a lamp and have clippers within easy reach.

When:
A sleepy cat is a happy cat. Make sure you grab clippers and treats while kitty is in la-la land so he isn't following your every move. Most cats sleep about 14 to 18 hours per day so you should ample opportunity to approach your cat during one of his many catnaps.

How:
Hold clippers in "trim-ready position" and approach your cat's resting place without startling her and engage in quiet kitty conversation. Take her paw in one hand and press to see the nail. By then kitty is has awakened but still in sleep mode. Quickly and discreetly, clip the nail within the reach. You do not need to clip the nails in order. At this point, the nail within easy access is the best.

If you move quickly enough, you may be able to clip two or three toenails before kitty has awoken fully and become wise to your intent. Do not try to finish the job if your cat is becoming anxious or annoyed. The point of the tactic is making the task as pleasant and stress-free for both you and your cat..

Here is a presentation on how to trim cat's toenails but don't expect your cat to look as docile as the one here.

Good luck!

What happens when an uncooperative cat has his nails growing out forever?

Okay, had to go back to this... my cat isn't cooperating! Wish me luck!

    Great tip!

OMG-Duffy just started doing that to me!! You're right - I need to keep the clippers on the back of the toilet. Thanks for the tip, my friend!

Oh, your Duffy looks so sweet (and mischievous). What a cutie! You're definitely right about keeping the clippers handy, and only settling on getting a few at a time (if that many). My cats love to sit on my lap when I'm on the toilet (shhh, don't tell anybody), and they're so relaxed and happy, that's the perfect time for me to clip their nails. Usually I can get as many as three nails clipped before they start protesting.
