Trio of Women Take the Nobel Peace Prize

Let’s Hear it for the Girls!

Breaking News out of Oslo, Norway this morning announced that three women who are diligently working on Human Rights issues have taken home the 2011 Nobel Peace Prize for their ability to "struggle for the safety of women and for women's rights to full participation in peace-building work."

The Nobel Peace Prize winners are: Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, Liberian peace activist Leymah Gbowee and Tawakkul Karman of Yemen

Awhile back, I wrote an article titled, "Teach a Woman to Fish and She Will Open a Sushi Stand" and what I meant in the article was that woman will seem to always find a way whether it is revolutionizing a country or just making ends meet. If you missed reading that article, you can read it here.

CNN put together a brief history of the Nobel Prize and you can read that here. This year there were a record 241 nominees for the coveted prize. Nominations come into the committee from all over the world. Of course, it isn't always without controversy. If you recall, the winner of the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize was President Barack Obama for strengthening cooperation among people and international diplomacy. At the time the President had just taken the office of Commander and Chief of the United States. Some questioned that he hadn't spent enough time forging "international diplomacy."

Still, winning the Nobel Peace Prize or any prize for your efforts is a good thing. Sometimes people struggling the world over need to know that someone is watching and their efforts are not in vain. One of this year's recipients, Tawakul Karman, caught the attention of TIME magazine back in February of this year. TIME wrote,

"Sometimes revolutionaries don't look the part. Tawakul Karman, Yemen's most active activist, favors long, loose-fitting gowns and coordinating headscarves. The 32-year-old mother of three looks, well, like a mom.

I'm with Julie, I'm singing the song now. It's amazing to see how things have progressed. Women use to have to sit back and stay quit while the men ruled the roost, now the roles have reversed.
