Recently, I discovered a new activity in my hometown of Eugene, Oregon. Trivia Night at the Eugene City Brewery on Olive Street. I admit I was skeptical at first. A friend of mine told me that she had gone a few times and had a great time. I wasn't sure that I believed her, I mean trivia? On a Friday night? It sounded a little un-cool to me. My friend, however, persisted and I finally gave in and decided to go with her and few other people one Friday night. I arrived at the Eugene City Brewery shortly before 8:00 PM when the Trivia begins. We were greeted and seated at a table near our Trivia host - Mr. Bill. Mr. Bill is a middle aged man with a mustache who wears a bow tie. It seemed very appropriate for a trivia guru. You can choose to have a meal at the Brewery or just order drinks. Throughout the evening the waitress in on us frequently to make sure we were okay and see if we wanted any refills on our drinks. The food at the Brewery was really good and priced fairly. They are a Brewery and have their own beer. There is a long list of beers to choose from and they will let try a taste of any beer you're interested in before ordering.
At 8:00 the festivities begin. Mr. Bill introduced himself and his helper, Beth. When the introductions were over he told us how Trivia Night works. We choose a team name, right down that team and the answers on a sheet of paper that had been provided and then hand our answers to Beth, who then scores them. Pretty simple. Mr. Bill then explained that at the end of each round he would be having a raffle to give away prizes. The prizes between rounds would be $1 vouchers for your bill at the Brewery and at the end of the night would be the "bigger" prizes such as hats, T-shirts, and Gift Certificates.
We began with a practice round so everyone could get a feel for the game. My group huddled together and chose a team name, 3 Babes and Brian. After the easy practice round the real game began. Some questions were really easy while some were quite hard. Mr. Bill would announce the catagory before each question and repeat the questions twice. If you still didn't catch the question he would come to your table and read it to you. At the end of the first round we collected our raffle tickets and waited. We ended up winning $2 to apply towards our bill.
The second round began and was harder than the first. At the end of this round we won only $1 towards our bill. The third and final round began at 10:00 pm. Be warned that if you are under the age of 21 you must leave at 10:00. The Oregon Liquor Laws require that minors not be on the premises after 10:00. The third round was not any harder than the second and at times was a little easier. The last question of the round was a "Sex and Nature" question which elicited several jokes and laughter from the crowd. When this round was over we collected our final batch of raffle tickets and waited for the final giveaway. To our surprise our group won 2 of the 6 prizes that were being given away! Each winner gets to choose their prize from the selection laid out by Mr. Bill. Our group was the first winner announced so we chose a Gift Certificate to the Eugene City Brewery, the second prize we won was a Eugene City Brewery hat. After the giveaway, Mr. Bill thanked everyone for coming and said that he hoped we all had a good time. I admit, I was surprised by what a good time I had at Trivia Night and I was grateful that my friend convinced me to go.
So if you're ever bored on a Friday Night and are looking for something fun and different to do, I recommend heading on down to the Eugene City Brewery and checking out Mr. Bill's Trivia Show.
