When you think about the month of October do Halloween parties, costumes, and trick-or-treating come to mind? There is a lot more to October than deciding what costume to wear and what to hand out to trick-or-treaters. There are several monthly observances, many famous people celebrate their birthday in October, and many historic events took place during the tenth month of the year.

Basic Facts

October comes from the Latin word octo which means eight. In ancient Rome, October was the eighth month of the year. When the Gregorian calendar was adopted, it became the tenth month of the year. It is one of the seven months with thirty one days.

Birthstone

The birthstones for October are opal and tourmaline. Opals are considered to be the traditional birthstone. They symbolize hope. Tourmaline is the modern birthstone for October. Both gemstones come in a wide variety of colors and are known for displaying multiple colors within the same stone.

Flower

The flower for the month of October is the calendula. Another name for calendula is pot marigold. They are easy to grow and popular in gardens. Colors range from pale yellow to deep orange. The calendula symbolizes sorrow or sympathy.

Astrological Signs

Libra and Scorpio are the astrological signs for October. Birthdays from October 1st through the 22nd fall under the sign of Libra. October 23rd through the 31st birthdays fall under the sign of Scorpio.

October Holidays and Observances

The most well known holiday of the month is Halloween, October 31st.

Columbus Day is on October 12th. This is the date Columbus arrived in the Americas in 1492. It has been a federal holiday since 1934. However, since 1971, the holiday has been celebrated on the second Monday in October.

Boss's Day is observed each year on October 16th.

Sweetest Day is observed on the third Saturday in October.

The first transcontinental telegraph message was sent on October 24, 1861.

President Cleveland dedicated the Statue of Liberty in New York Harbor on October 28, 1886.

The stock market crash known as Black Tuesday occurred on October 29, 1929. The crash made worldwide news and marked the beginning of the Great Depression.

The San Francisco earthquake occurred on October 17, 1989. It registered 7.1 on the Richter scale.

    According to the perpetual calendar, we used same calendar for the years 1993, 1999, and will use again in 2021. Now I am sorry to let the wind out of everyone's sail, but we as grown'ups need to know that the perpetual calendar is correct.
