Troop 989 Uses Cookie Money to Feed the Needy

The Girl Scouts in Jefferson County Tennessee Helping Others

In today's society it is wonderful to see young people wanting help others. That is exactly what Troop 989 of the Girl Scouts in Jefferson County Tennessee did.

These girls had been selling cookies as usual. But as they traveled through White Pine Tennessee and saw around 75 people standing in line at a food pantry, they decided exactly what they would do with the proceeds from the cookie sales. The girls were said the have had tears in their eyes when they saw those people.

These young ladies had semi-trucks (which they doubled from one to two) loaded with food brought in and distributed it to the hungry. Now that is what I call serving your community.

They distributed over 30,000 pounds of food. That was about $1,100 worth or 1,500 boxes worth of cookie proceeds.

With Jefferson County's unemployment rate being 12.6 %, which is up over half a point from January and over 5% from last year at this time, the Girl Scouts knew people needed help.

All of this took place this past weekend, April 4, 2009. They said that they had enough food left over to have another pantry in two weeks. This is the fourth food pantry Girl Scout Troop 989 has had.

This troop of young ladies is also planning to hand out school supplies later this year. And to beat all, they plan on having another food pantry in November of this year.

These girls may still be a little too young to fully understand the impact they are making on these people's lives. But as they grow older, they will have this memory and can be proud to have been a part of such a wonderful experience.

These girls are to be commended. They have done something that not even some adults would do.

They not only gave of their time and money, but of themselves. And at the ages they are, that is a lot.

So straight from the heart, I personally would like to say, God Bless all you young ladies for the compassion and love you have shown the needy people of Jefferson County. God, I am sure, will bring this back to you "seven-fold".

You all are truly inspirations and should be commended for the work you have done and continue to do.

Thank you, and God Bless you always. Please continue the good work you do.
