Tropical Storm Fay Headed Toward Florida

Rosa Hayes
Tropical Storm Fay is headed toward Florida and is predicted to hit the Florida Keys later today. Tropical Storm Fay has already killed a dozen people while driving its fury and winds through the Caribbean. The hurricane is thought to be headed between Naples and Tampa Bay tomorrow with winds of at least 74 miles per hour, as reported by Bloomberg.

The National Hurricane Center in Miami is also reporting that many schools and after school activities will be canceled due to the Tropical Storm Fay. For reports on the centers that will be closing as the National Hurricane Center in Miami receives them, you can look to Bay News 9.

I don't live in an area that is common for Hurricanes, but I do live in the heart of Tornado Alley. There are many things that you can do to protect yourself further during hurricane season or when you know that a hurricane like the Tropical Storm Fay is headed your way.

Leave if at all possible

The difference between a tornado and a hurricane besides the fact that one is started on the ocean and the other on land is that most hurricanes can be predicted enough to give people time to get out of the area. If at all possible, get out of the area that the hurricane is predicted to hit in. Keep a close eye on the news so that you will know how long you have before the hurricane hits.

Hurricane insurance

There are many people who refuse to get hurricane insurance because they simply do not believe that a hurricane will hit in their area. Hurricanes are not prejudice against anyone and they can hit if you live within that are. Protect yourself and your assets by purchasing hurricane insurance since a hurricane can wipe out all that you own.

Seek the nearest shelter

There is one thing that many people have that live in tornado alley and that is a tornado shelter. Many people who live within areas that are common for hurricanes also have shelters for this purpose. If you do not have shelters ask your neighbor or ask the fire department where a community shelter is so that you can protect yourself.

Pack a bag per person

Only pack a few things inside of a backpack that you will need just in case things get bad. Don't pack more than you can carry especially in the event that you get trapped somewhere or need to move fast. You don't want to be trying to carry a lot and run at the same time. In the bag that you pack, you will also want to pack a photo of each person inside of a tightly sealed bag just in case someone gets lost.

Select a destination

A destination can be a favorite spot or a church that everyone in your family knows about. If you select a destination to meet at once the storm is over you will be able to keep everyone together in the event that someone gets lost in the commotion. If someone does happen to not return to the destination spot within a few hours, contact your local authorities and show them the picture that you packed that I had mentioned in the previous paragraph.

Keep your family as safe as possible during the hurricane season and read up on as much as you can about staying safe if a hurricane like the Tropical Storm Fay ever hits your area.

My sister-in-law lived through Hurricane Andrew many years ago, and once she moved to Indiana she was always anxious when we had tornado weather. She'd come to my house which has a basement, just in case. It pays to be prepared!

We have relatives in the area and I believe they may be leaving. I hope so!
