Tropical Vacations Away from Crowds

Uncrowded Tropical Vacations

Gwyn Guess
There are some of us who just hate being tourists when we go on vacations to visit foreign soils or beautiful places in the states. We can't stand the pushy crowds or the commercialism involved in tour groups. We abhor all the trinkets and over-priced carnival-like attractions. For us, these things are just distractions from the real purpose of a vacation.

Many people love Hawaii and it is indeed a real paradise as far as the beauty of the islands. But some islands are to be avoided if one doesn't want to cope with heavy crowds. The big Island is a no-no, for those people. Maui is a good place for families, but Molokai is truly the place to go for an experience of paradise that still has much unspoiled about it. This island is dotted with little villages and fishing ponds but doesn't have much tourist development at all. It's suggested to book a rental in East Molokai where one can snorkel, sail, dive, swim, sun or just relax in peace listening to the surf and the sounds of undisturbed nature. The cottage rentals here run around $1000 per week, depending on the season. Consult the individual cottages to see what is furnished and about getting food for your stay.

El Cuyo Vacation Rentals in the Yucatan should offer peace and tranquility well away from the crowds in other parts of this popular Peninsula. This is the property of a transplanted German who moved here and built two small cottages away from the crowds and right at the beach of Puerto del Cuyo. The cottages are just 1200 ft. away from the town square and there are two caretakers who will help guests with shopping and give information about the area. The town itself is very small, with just enough restaurants, Internet access, a bakery and golf cart rental. There's fresh produce for those who don't want to go out. The cottage is located in the Ria Largatos National Park. Palm trees, sea turtles, coconut palms and pink flamingos are all right at their doorstep. The two caretakers can even cook and run errands if it's needed. Price for this 2 bed, 1.5 bath cottage is $850 per week in high season and $650 per week at off- season. Go with friends and this could be one of the least expensive tropical getaways ever. Cottages are available year-round. Just email the owner, Mattias Doehling, for details and more contact information, using the form on the web site above.

There's some more Hawaii cottages listed on the Internet that are rentable by the week. One I found is in Waianae, right next to the Kopelai National Park and only $125 per night with a minimum four-night stay. That's well under $1,000 for a full week and if split between two couples, it would be remarkably inexpensive. Yes, Waikiki is on the island, but this is tucked away from the crowds and the attractions in town are accessible by bus. Walk down to thew beach and snorkel, swim with dolphins and turtles, hike the trails and just enjoy a quiet time watching the sunsets in this vacation condo. Contact is only available by filling out the email form from the web site above.

Crowds on the big island? The big island has the lowest population density of any of the islands. It is beautiful and as laid back as Hawaii gets>

Yes, I would love to take a tropical vacation away from the crowds. I'm not sure Mexico or Hawaii would be the destinations I'd choose, though, just because they are so well known. A friend spent a week in Panama and said it was absolutely beautiful and not very crowded at all. I've also heard Tahiti and the South Pacific can be great destinations since they are so far away.
