Step one: The bag
You really don't need that oversized army bag. A simple bag with a easy strap for over the sholder. Make sure it has a few pockets for those small things you may want to bring.
Step two: Clothes
Its not always true that your only going to be in the hospital for only one day. There may be a reason that you might stay for a longer period of time. In which you may want to bring two pairs of your maternity pants. (Yes ladies you don't fit into your pre-pregnancy pants right after delivery.) I suggest bringing two to three shirts, comfy shirts nothing that is tight. You want easy access if you choose to nurse. I would not bring a night gown. Something that most pregnant women don't share is all the blood that follows in delivery. The hospital provides you with nightgowns that you can get as messy as you need. They also provide booties (which you don't take off) and a robe. I wouldn't bring any underwear either, its to messy and its all givin to you.
Step three: Personal Items
I know what your thinking all the lists that you have read bring such things up like pads, makeup, shampoo all the stuff you bring when your going on vacation. Well this is no vacation.
You really don't need any of that. If you are only there one day then why would you want to bring your entire bathroom along with you. Do you really think your going to care what you look like after you deliver your bundle of joy. The hospital gives you pads that are wonderful. It is really like putting a diaper on without the whole contraption. They cover everything and if you run out let your nurse know and they will give you more. My personal experience is to ask them right before you leave that way you have some for home. If you have a travel size shampoo and conditioner bring it you may take more then one shower , but trust me you will want to take one before you go home.
Step four: Babies Things
This is a little harder to follow. As a women we have a hard enough time finding an outfit for ourselves let alone all the choices we have for dressing up that tiny person who is about to make there debute. Of course you only need one outfit for your little one and depending on weather they should dress aproprietly. I'm sure you have there baby blanket picked out what nuk you would like them to first use and out of all the new bears you picked the perfect little toy to introduce your new baby to. The hospital provides all the essentials your baby needs like diapers, hat, blanket, wipes, bath needs, and in a lot of hospitals they give you the thermometer they used and give you a diaper bag to bring home just to help you out those first few weeks.
