Troubled Hearts; Harsh Words

Day 46 - a Year with God

Marilyn Quinn
I am working on guarding my mind and watching my words. I have noticed when I am troubled, when something is weighing on me and I can't find peace about something; I have a tendency to use harsh words. Not necessarily out of anger, but out of frustration. Sometimes my mind is working overtime and it doesn't welcome an interruption.

I struggle with keeping my words pleasant. The Bible has much to offer in the way of guidance regarding the use of harsh words. I am relying on them to strengthen my resolve and change my words. They are good scriptures, but I didn't really need the Bible to tell me that harsh words should be avoided.

Harsh words harm the spirit. Hastily uttered angry words can break a heart. Once your words are out of your mouth, you can regret them. You can ask for forgiveness for using them. You can be forgiven. But the effect the words had on the recipient are not likely to fade and heal easily.

It would be like smashing your favorite vase. You can regret doing it. You may even pick up the pieces and glue them back together; but that vase will never be the same as before. It will never be fully intact again without blemishes or cracks. The human spirit is much the same. Harsh words crack and break us. Apologies may help, but the hurt and the scar are usually still there to some extent.

"A fool gives full vent to his spirit, but a wise man quietly holds it back." Proverbs 29:11

"Refrain from anger, and forsake wrath! Fret not yourself; it tends only to evil." Psalm 37:8

"Know this, my beloved brothers: let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger; for the anger of man does not produce the righteousness of God." James 1:19-20

"But now you must put them all away: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and obscene talk from your mouth." Colossians 3:8

"Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fit's the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear." Ephesians 4:29

"A hot-tempered man stirs up strife, but he who is slow to anger quiets contention." Proverbs 15:18
