Troubleshooting Your Fish Tank Light

Shannon Frye
One day you go to turn on your fish tank light and the light never comes on. There is something wrong with the light on your fish tank. Sometimes fish tank lights can be very touchy. The first thing you will want to do is wiggle the outlet plug to make sure that the plug is not loose. Sometimes the fish tank light will work it's way back out of the outlet. If you have wiggled the plug and the light will not come on you will want to try something different. At this point you will want to unplug the light completely and plug it in to the outlet another time. Check to see if the light comes on at this point.

Now you will want to grab an extension cord and plug the light into a completely different outlet. Sometimes the outlets go out. If you have a red switch on the outlet you will want to push the switch in to reset the outlet and try to plug in the light again. If at this point you check to see if the light will come on and it won't turn you, you know it's not a problem with the outlet. If the light and filter are plugged into the same outlet you can also plug the filter into the outlet where the light was to see if the filter starts to work. If the filter was working but stopped working when you placed it in the other outlet, you will know that the outlet is not working properly.

Once you know that you have the light plugged into an outlet which is working you will want to flip the light over to take a look at the light. If you accidentally dropped the light into your fish tank it will take a few days to dry out and that could be the reason that your fish tank light is not working properly. You will want to let the light dry out and then wait to turn it on until the light has dried out completely.

You will now want to wiggle around the light to see if the light will turn on. Sometimes, lights are very touchy and if you walk around it might shift the light and turn it off. You will want to wiggle the light to see if that solves the problem. You will want to press it into the end to make sure that it's connected good enough. You can also pull the bulb out and plug it back in.

You might also have a light bulb that has stopped working. You can purchase replacement bulbs from any local pet store.
