Scott Kessman

Low water pressure in a kitchen sink is a problem many people have experienced. While it is usually just caused by the plumbing in the sink itself, low water pressure can also be a sign of a more serious problem in the pipes in your house.

Low water pressure from the taps on a sink can be a problem when you are cooking or cleaning in your kitchen. More often than not, you will also experience low water problem in your toilet, bathroom and the other plumbing fixtures in your house as well.

How then do you fix low water pressure in your kitchen sink?

The first thing to do is to check the sink sprayer or aerator. A lot of the time, low water pressure is the result of plumbing problems here. Check to see if the there is any leakage from a joint in the hose connecting the sink to the water supply valve. Take apart the sprayer and make sure that the diverter that feeds into it is in good condition. If there is a blockage in it, soak the diverter in a cup full of vinegar for a few hours and that should fix the problem. Next take off the spray head and check if the aerator is blocked and if it is soak it too. Now check if the hose itself is blocked and if it is soak it in vinegar before flushing water through it. Obviously if it is cracked, you will need to replace it.

Another reason for low water pressure is if the pressure regulator, the device that is used to adjust the pressure and is normally located below the hose connection, is damaged. If it is, you will need to call out a professional plumber to fix it. Trying to do this job yourself can just make your low water pressure problems worse so don't even think about it.

Problems with your water supply can also lead to low water pressure in the home, especially in apartment buildings where the distribution of water between different stories can create low water pressure.
