If the filter has not completely stopped working you will want to unplug the filter. You will want to let the water drain from the intake tube and place the filter system into a bucket. Then you will want to take the filter system over to the sink. You will need to get an old toothbrush to clean out the parts on the filter system. You will want to remove all of the parts from the filter system. You will want to remove all of the tubes and every part inside of the filter. Remember where you got the parts from so that you can put it back together.
You will want to take each piece and clean it out with the toothbrush. You will want to clean the intake tube as well as the siphon tube on the end. You will also want to clean the tubes which flow water onto the biowheels if you have that type of filter system. Be careful not to break any parts off of the filter system when you are pulling the pieces apart. If you have to pull too hard you are probably not disconnecting the parts the correct way.
Once you have all of the parts out of the filter system you will need to clean them very well. Remember to clean the impeller which is located right above the motor. Once all of the parts are clean you can place all the parts back together. You will first want to place the impeller back above the motor. You will want to make sure the impeller is snapped in above the motor. You will have to fit it into place. The motor will not run if the impeller is not in the correct way. Place everything back in the filter and plug it in for a second. If you hear it start up, you've solved the problem. If you do not hear it start up make sure everything is corrected the right way. The impeller might be in upside down. If that doesn't work, the motor might have blown on the filter system.
