Advice for First Time Trout Fishing Trips

J. Motes
Here are some trout fishing tips for beginners that can be used to make that first trout fishing trip more productive. Trout fishing is a popular type of fishing for many reasons. First, trout is a great tasting fish that is easy to prepare. Trout fishing is often done in scenic country with few other anglers providing a relaxing environment. Trout fishing is also generally best in cooler weather when largemouth bass and other popular game fish are not biting particularly well. Trout are also stocked by many state fish and wildlife agencies, meaning that trout can be caught within a short drive of the home of many anglers.

Equipment

While native trout can be good fighters, lightweight fishing tackle is a good choice for beginners to trout fishing. Inexpensive rods and reels sold by large retailers and sporting goods stores are more than sufficient for most trout fishing purposes. Though various sizes of line and hooks will work, a good place to start is 4 pound test and #10 hooks. These guidelines are for trout fishing in streams and small lakes. Lake trout, that grow much larger, will require heavier gear.

Lures / Baits

Trout can be caught with a large number of baits and lures, but simple and inexpensive lures such as inline spinners and spoons and baits like worms and PowerBait are effective and reliable. Many large sporting goods stores and general retailers offer trout fishing kits that will contain an assortment of appropriately sized trout lures.

Locating Trout

State fish and wildlife agencies usually have good information on their websites that an angler can use to locate streams and lakes with trout in their area. Once an anger arrives at the water, trout can be found in a number of ways. In streams, trout can often be sight fished, meaning that the angler can see the trout and cast to them. Trout are often found behind breaks in a stream's current where they watch for food be pushed by in the current.

Techniques

Drifting worms or other baits in a trout stream is one of the simplest ways to fish for trout and can be very effective. Fishing lures through large pools of water in a stream can catch trout also. Beginner trout anglers will quickly learn that trout fishing leads to a lot of snags, but with experience the angler can learn to work lures and baits and avoid many of the snags.
