'True Blood' Writing at Core of Show's Success

'True Blood' Fascinates Because of the Incredible Writing

Mary Zeiher
True Blood is simply the most fun that you can have on TV on a Sunday night. I have watched every True Blood episode of Season One and Two and it still manages to thoroughly indulge my sense of warped and dark entertainment.

The last True Blood episode, "I Will Rise Up", was full of vampire power struggles, suicide bombings of vampires - I didn't think that was even possible - and a self-aware True Blood vamp that walked into the sun. Not to mention the antics of Maryann, possible local primitive goddess, that keeps us entertained weekly.

I think it is the incredibly talented writing that keeps True Blood crisp and in character at all times. Here are some of my personal favorite lines from the recent True Blood episode:

Hoyt's Mom is all upset about her precious baby boy dating a True Blood vampire chick and proceeded to tell him, "I simply object to a girlfriend who will kill you and eat you. I think that's reasonable." A perfect passive-aggressive line from an overbearing toxic mommy.

After she totally unnecessarily sucks silver out of Eric's body and in her unique, cutesy Sookie-way, Sookie screams at Eric: "You big, lying a-hole!" How 'True Blood Sookie' adorable is that statement? Only on True Blood from Sookie Stackhouse would you hear the word 'a-hole' literally being spoken, totally in character.

Godric, who as we now know is the shortest-lived and most self-aware vampire ever on True Blood graced us with this line: "I'm actually older than your Jesus. I wish I could have known him, but I missed it."

Jason Stackhouse, sexy and not so intelligent eye-candy, is by far the most entertaining naïve True Blood character. He does not take himself too seriously, especially when he had sex with the preachers wife in the balcony of the church and then proceeded later to tell the preacher, "I've already been to Heaven, and it was inside your wife."

These perfectly written lines are all from just one episode of the wildly successful True Blood show on HBO.

Don't take me wrong, the acting is also exceptional and the settings are always perfect, but for me personally it is the writing for these characters that have me ready every Sunday evening at 9:00 p.m. with a soda and snacks to eagerly sit back and watch True Blood. I can't wait for next week!

for a tvshow, I love True Blood insanely much. I usually dont care about tv ( or vampires for that matter) :) I really hope those who havent seen it decides to have a look, its not really about vampires. Its an epic, fun tale of us humans, society issues and a bit sexy/gory Shapespearean versus David Lynch. Its awesome and the best on tv since Twin Peaks, even better because you always have a smile on your face plus its a lot sexier (cheesy orgies aside).
