True Colors - a Rhyming Pose on Choice of Clothes

Linda Ann Nickerson

Our wedding day, you dressed in black;
You said it made you slim,
Until you unleashed your attack
Because I married him.

Piercing everything but ears,
You toted duffels, packed with tears,
Filled with bitterness and fears,
Accumulated o'er the years.

They parted ways before I came;
The bodies had been buried.
You needed someone safe to blame;
The boundaries had been blurried.

Piercing everything but ears,
You toted duffels, packed with tears,
Filled with bitterness and fears,
Accumulated o'er the years.

You donned dark garb to banish joy,
To telegraph depression,
But all you managed to destroy
Was family's first impression.

Piercing everything but ears,
You toted duffels, packed with tears,
Filled with bitterness and fears,
Accumulated o'er the years.

Our blended family won't disband,
Despite a teen's defiance.
And should you stand, to make demand,
You'll foster our alliance.

So dump your duffel; dry your tears;
And find your smile, despite your fears.
Close your eyes, and try to hear
True colors deepen through the years.
