The first lady I want to speak of is someone I have known since I was a little girl. Actually, she and my parents knew each other before I was born. She is the most spirit filled woman. Even though she and I have not been close in the years since my parents left church, we remain on a friendly basis. Two weeks ago, when church was over, we were back in the sound section (Shawn works there). He said Mrs. W. (I do not want to give her name on a public Internet source) is sick.
The last time I heard those words it was my husband's aunt who was sick and it was cancer. My reply to my husband was, "and I don't suppose you are going to tell me it's pneumonia either." He then said Mrs. W. had cancer in both her liver and spine. Because of my experiences, I've became a go-to of sorts when someone has cancer. I willingly do what I can to help but fear that in seeing me they will assume all will be fine. With Shawn's aunt, she was in remission a very long time before she relapsed and died. I looked at her as my source for survival and we lost her this past July. People should always look to God in situations such as these.
Shawn and I returned to church the following week. I had been unable to speak with Mrs. W. on the phone as I had planned to do. I imagined she was angry with the world and I wanted to be there to help her through it. No one understands what a cancer diagnosis does unless they are the ones diagnosed. Imagine my surprise when she told me her biopsy surgery revealed that everything was not cancer at all but benign! I told my dad and he gave me the idea to write this as an article. He also said, "Do you believe there's a God?" My dad doesn't listen much when I talk.
The next story is personal. At the age of 13, I experienced the grace of salvation. I did not walk to the altar. The reason was not out of fear but out of complete shyness. Even though I knew in my church baptism was not required to enter Heaven, I felt convicted to become baptized. Without getting into too much detail about my health because the reader can find a lot written about it, I experienced a rough period of time in the 1990's. In 1993, a lesion appeared on my brain. Scans are not what they were then and it was believed the lesion was malignant. I had a bone marrow aspiration and spinal tap to see if the cancer had spread because they were certain they were working on the grounds of a second cancer relapse.
The cells taken from the procedure were fine but surgery was ordered. The Sunday night before this operation, I asked the only preacher who visited me at St, Jude hospital to baptize me. He was about to leave for a missionary trip but delayed it long enough for me to have my wish.
The next day the operation was successful. The brain surgery was the most difficult of all to recover from due to swelling and vomiting. When pathology returned, the tumor cells were benign. Some will say it was poor equipment that led them to suspect I had cancer one more time. I do not pretend to say my baptism played a part-but it is tempting to think it did. The fact was I went into surgery believing I had cancer and came out stunned and grateful.
If you learn you have a chronic health condition, don't lose hope, don't let the naysayers who believe your speaking about it makes you weak and a coward out you down. It takes a much stronger person to speak about something like cancer than to bury their heads in the sand. I have contributed several biblical quotes that helped me through my experiences. Rest assured that if the worst happens and life on this earth is lost, you have truly lost nothing compared to what awaits you ahead.
Jeremiah 29:11
For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future NIV
(This was a passage God often pointed me to when I believed my life would soon be over)
Isaiah 40:31
but those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint. NIV
Psalm 34:19
People who do what is right may have many problems, but the Lord will solve them all. NIV
Mark 5:34
He said to her, "Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace and be freed from your suffering." (This was in reference to the woman with an issue of bleeding) NIV
*NIV, personal experience*

I believe in His healing powers. Not all can be healed, but some can be if it is God's Will to do so. Pray. We need to humble ourselves and pray. This was a great article, Andrea. Cheers :) Well done.
