True Pet Adoption Story

Bella the Stellar Dog Speaks

Renee Morway
Woof, you you-mans and you-womans.

Please lough me to deuce myself. My name is Bella. A picture's worth a thousand birds (Yum! I likes birds!), so check out my pic. But don't get cornfused (Hey, I likes corn, too) cuz I ain't (Woops, Mommy said not to say that) no fox or wolf, even though you-mans always say I lookalike one. Beleaf me, I'm just a plain ol' dog named Bella. It's true! But I gots a portent season to tell the true story 'bout my pet adoption.

Before I was Bella I was Lucy and before that...uh....I don't member. Don't be laughin' cuz you you-mans forget stuff more than anybodies. Lots o times, Mommy forgets where she put her jingly things, which really sucks when I gots to go pee (It's true!). Besides, I gots good seasons to forget the name I had 'fore my pet adoption.

I was in a cold, dark, dank place. (I thought it was stank, but Mommy says dank). I got there cuz, can you believe this, there's you-mans who don't know that dogs can't fly? In case there's more... "HELLO! DOGGIES CAN'T FLY!" What? It's true.

So, I laid (lied?) in the dank place where those you-mans left me. I was shiverin'; it was snow time (Hey, I likes to lick the snow off my paw pads). Before long, (sorry, I can't tells time) I gots hungry; I didn't have no food. (Mommy says I didn't have ANY, but I'll tell you, true-fully, I didn't have NO, zilch, zip, NADA food).

I didn't know whats to do. I couldn't go a-huntin'; I couldn't even crawls cuz those you-mans had tied some heavy metal junk to my front leg. All I could figures was to make all the dog noise I could and hope some you-mans would come and save me. So, I barked, yipped, and yelped, loud. Even when I gots real tired, I still whimpered.

At first, I had lots o hopes, and dreams, too. I dreamt of a long arm with a big giant hand on the end of it holding a humungo super-size burger. Soft, gooey, yel'orange clung to its thick edges and beef juicy-juice trickled down those giant savior fingers and begged, "Lick me! Lick me!" I'm tellin' ya, I could taste it! What? It's true.

Now, true-fully, I've always dreamt of burgers, but never like this. It was, what you call, a recurry dream. (I don't likes curry; it burns my splotchy tongue). I had my other favorite dreams, too, the ones where I'm chasing birdies and squirrels through the park. (Mommy says my little paws patter, whatever that means, when I have these dreams).

Every time I woked from my dreams, though, there wasn't no burgers, birdies, or squirrels. There was just the darkness. Pains started to come outta more than just my leg and I had never been so hungry or cold in my whole one years. (Maybe Mommy's right? Maybe it was dank?) After awhiles (I still can't tell time), but it was after my rib bones got bigger and my insides started to hurt more than my outsides, less and less noises came out of me and my hopes of being found started to dwindells.

Some you-mans may think that I'm just a dumb dog, but it ain't (woops) true, I's smart 'nuff to knows what left for dead means. So, I laid (lied?) and I waited for it. With my broked, metal-clad leg stickin' straight out, the side of my little furry face nuzzled into the cold cement, and my long, splotchy tongue droopin' out to the side, I stared at those killer cellar stairs, and I waited for it...doggie death.

As everything got burrier and blurrier, I member thinking how I'd never chomp into another juicy-juice burger, or chase after another hoppity birdie, or fuzzy-tailed squirrel, again. I was lonelier and scareder than I'd ever been in my whole one years. And that's when I forgots the name I had before my pet adoption.

I was driftin'...driftin'. Then, somehow, I don't know how, there they were, just like Sara McLachlan (Hey, I likes her) says on TV... the arms of the angels. I thought they came from the You-manSewCity. (Wow! A whole city where you-mans sew). But I messed up, it's true name is the Humane Society. Those angel arms raised me up from the cold, hard ground and I thought for sure they was takin' me to Doggie Heaven, but they didn't.

They took me to a true haven, right here on earth, for dogs that are still alive, even if it's just barely cuz they's so e-macy-ate-it. (I couldn't figures it at the time cuz I didn't go to Macy's and I sure didn't ate it, but now I knows the true meaning).

At the ASPCA, I got warmed-up, all my pains went away, and I got feds. They gave me a special gift, too, one that I'll cherries forevers and can't never lose cuz it's hidden inside my leg. When I woked up from the gift plantin', I was Lucy.

Three months later, when I could walk again (Woof! Can you beleaf it?), I went downstairs to the pet adoption center. I had my own little glass room. There was plenties of other dogs there, though. They was barkin', yippin', and smackin' their paws against their glasses every time you-mans went by. I couldn't figures it. Then, as dogs kept leavin' the pet adoption center with workers and I kept hearin' the same two little words, I got it. Pet adoption is big words for "new home." Yep, it's true!

Then, I knew why Liza was jumpin' higher than you-man's heads at the pet adoption center. She wanted to get their tension!.She wanted a new home! I got so 'cited, I tried to jump, too. Suddenly, I had a rebelation:

"What you-man wants a dog that's scraw-kneed with a broked leg that's just a vet bill waitin' to happen? With all of the cute, healthy dogs here at the pet adoption center with good, strong legs my chances of pet adoption, i.e. new home, are skewed. I'm skewed!"

So, I curled up in a little ball, hided my face under my big cone hat, and stared at the floor, forlorn, for long days until Mommy came to the pet adoption center and I became Bella.

That night, when Mommy took me home, I gots to stop, lots o times, and lick the snow off my paw pads (Woof)!

Now, sometimes, Mommy calls me Bella the Stellar Dog. She says I'm the best damn dog she's ever seen. Better than some fancy dogs who didn't even come from the pet adoption center, but I don't know why. Hey! You're a you-man! Maybe you can help me figures it?

Do you think it's cuz I do tricks like: sit, lie down, up, stay, come, paw, and kissy? Could it be cuz I don't chew nothing but my toys? Is it that I never, ever, go potty in the house? Is it cuz I play fetch and snuggle-bunny? Oh! Oh! It's probly cuz I don't eat Mommy's cat, ain't (woops) it? Is it my watch-dogged-ness? I always bark when I hear stuff. Maybe it's cuz I stand still for scrubby-dubby? Hey! I do this c-r-a-z-y wiggle-dance every time Mommy comes home, could it be that? I also catch houseflies in mid-air (It's true!) (Yum! I likes flies!), Is that maybe it? I don't know. I'm runnin' outta ideas; I just do dog stuff. If you know, please tell me, cuz I sure don't want no more names.

Being Bella, I may not gets the whole juicy-juice burger at once, but I get pieces of it, lots o times, which adds up to I don't know how many burgers cuz I can't count, yet. I gets lots of other yummy treats, too. And I gets to chase the birdies and squirrels in the park just as if my leg never got broked in the first place When I was down in the dank place, I never magined my recurry dreams would come alive. But thanks to the Humane Society and the ASPCA's pet adoption center, they did.

So, there it is, my Bella the dog's true story 'bout my pet adoption. Don't you just love a story with a happy ending? Mine would be one if it wasn't for all those dogs I left behind in their little glass rooms at the pet adoption center.

Did you know there's lots more pet adoption centers with more dogs in 'em (and kitties, too)? Hey, you could turn your you-man arms into angel arms (It's true!) just by goin' and wrappin' them 'round another Bella that needs you, right now, today.

If you can't do this for some portent season, have I got a dog tip for you:

Just part with a little bit of your money to turn a helpless life from dank to sunny. Donate to an animal shelter today and send the next Bella on its way to a new life that's free from strife. As you read, animals whimper in sorrow. Have a heart! Don't put them off till tomorrow.

Thanks, you you-mans for readin' my true pet adoption story. I know lots o' other dog things 'bout grooming, training, feeding, and more. Now, that I have this second chance at life, I'm gonna use it to shares them with you (Hey, I likes you)! So, check back, soon, for my Bella the Stellar Dog tips. Till then....

Cheerio, (Hey! I likes Cheerios)

From the skyscrapers of NYC, I face strength. From the people of NYC, I gain understanding. And from the heart of NYC, I feel inspiration. So, I tend to write about the city quite a bit.  View profile

  • The Humane Society and ASPCA saved Bella's life
  • You can turn your arms into angel arms
  • Or give from your good heart to save the next Bella
According to the NCPPSP, approximately 9.6 million animals are euthanized in the U.S. annually
According to USA today, only 500 out of 2,500 animal shelters were no-kill shelters in 2004

Adopted animals are special since, like human children, you picked them yourself rather than getting them through the whims of chance. Our Phantom, the Wonder Cat, came from an adoption center. Very interesting to have this terrific story from Bella's point of view.

Thank you all for your kind words and my best wishes to everyone and their adopted pets....Renee.
