Trust, Cellphones Don't Mix on 'Secret Life of the American Teenager'

COMMENTARY | This week on "Secret Life of the American Teenager," viewers were treated to lessons in cellphone etiquette.

George and Amy

Witnessing last week's fight between Ricky (Daren Kagasoff) and Amy (Shailene Woodley), George (Mark Derwin) took Amy's side by arguing that everyone checks other people's phones.

George's revelation left Amy wondering if he had been checking her phone as well. Funny how Amy has so little privacy that her own father is snooping around her phone. Meanwhile, he lets Ashley drive around the country on a road trip with a teenage boy.

Adrian and Grace

In other phone-related matters, Adrian (Francia Raisa) apologized for calling Grace's (Megan Park) ex-boyfriends. What Grace didn't know was that Adrian had also called her current boyfriend, Daniel. This led to a mini-rift between Grace and Daniel because he had not told her about the phone call.

Adrian has her eye on Ricky, but, in the meantime, Grace is attempting to distract her by fixing her up with one of Daniel's friends. I'm not sure it's the best solution. Given Adrian's perennially destructive behavior, sterilization would save everyone a lot of grief.

Ricky and Ethan

This week's after-school special message? Never send private pictures of yourself to people over the phone. Ethan, a troubled foster child, had circulated pictures of his ex-girlfriend and was facing legal consequences.

Ethan caused a rift between Amy and Ricky because he was staying at Ricky's apartment while he dealt with the authorities. This gave Adrian an opening to spread the news that Ricky and Amy had "broken up."

In the spirit of spicing up their marriage, Margaret and Shakur joked about sending naughty pictures to each other. Glad to see that they're having some one-on-one time, though I don't think they'll have to worry about anyone circulating pictures of them.

Ricky and Amy

There were two morals to the Ricky/Amy situation: 1) don't snoop around your significant other's phone and 2) don't choose passwords that are easily deciphered. (Surely Ricky could have chosen a password other than "John.")

These teen parents were the heart of this week's phone/trust dilemma. Amy had broken into Ricky's phone and found suggestive messages from Adrian. After catching her in the act, Ricky stormed off because he felt Amy didn't trust him.

They eventually made up. Amy explained that she would have felt better if he had told her about the messages in the first place. Ricky assured her that he had no intention of responding to Adrian's overtures. He was "done with crazy."

"Secret Life of the American Teenager" airs Monday nights at 8/7c on ABC Family.
