As the kids got older I found that I was throwing out more canned vegetables than they were eating. I tried to spice them up to disguise the taste, but they weren't fooled. So I cleaned out my pantry and donated the extra cans to the local food pantry. I began buying frozen vegetables when I would do my weekly grocery shopping. Frozen vegetables are great. They taste fresh, you can cook them to whatever consistency you prefer, and there are no preservatives in them. Though I preferred them, and the kids would eat more vegetables when I bought them sometimes it was harder because they would take a longer to cook. Anything that adds extra time to dinner preparation is difficult for a single mom with a full-time job.
Recently, though, Birdseye introduced a product that makes us all happy. It's called the 'Steamfresh' line of frozen vegetables, and is available in the frozen food section of your grocery store.
What makes Steamfresh vegetables so revolutionary is that you cook them right inside the bag. The bag goes from store to freezer to microwave, then right to your table. There is no need to boil water or use special microwave steaming bowls. The bag has a special strip on the back that allows steam to escape, cooking the vegetables until they're perfectly done. Most vegetables take about 5 minutes (depending on the wattage of your microwave), and come in many varieties. Broccoli, corn, peas, beans, several other vegetable mixtures, along with premium select vegetables and seasoned vegetables are all available in Birdseye's Steamfresh line of frozen vegetables.
After cooking, I like to open one end of the bag, sprinkle in some spices and maybe a touch of butter, and shake it until it is mixed well. Then I either place the vegetables in a serving dish or directly into our plates to serve dinner. One bag serves the perfect amount for my family of four. The best part is, they're so easy to cook, I can just ask one of the kids to pick a veggie and pop it in the microwave. Steamfresh vegetables are easy, healthy, and the kids love them. What more could I ask for?
