Try This Impossibly Good Low-Sodium Barbeque Sauce for Your Next Cookout!

Kate Baxter
Good grillmasters know that when it comes to great barbeque, it's all about the sauce. But, if you need a sauce that's not heavy on the sodium or other less healthy ingredients, you may search through the commercially prepared sauces in vain. Or, you may find one, but also find that it's lacking in that snappy barbeque taste.

And, of course, 'fresh' is always healthier--but, what if you're not a sauce-making expert? And, what if you don't have time to slow-cook sauce?

The good news is that you CAN have both tangy taste and better nutrition, when you make this impossibly good low-sodium barbeque sauce! And, best of all, there's no need for special skills or a secret family recipe--and you can whip up a batch in no time at all!

IMPOSSIBLY GOOD LOW-SODIUM BARBEQUE SAUCE (makes 24-3 Tbsp. servings)

Ingredients

2-6 oz. cans low-sodium tomato paste
4 cloves garlic, minced
1 1/2 cups water
1 1/2 cups cider vinegar
4 Tbsp. canola or vegetable oil
4 Tbsp. honey
4 Tbsp. chili powder
1 tsp. ground cumin
Dash Tabasco sauce, or to taste (optional)

Directions

In a large stainless-steel saucepan or pasta pot, combine the tomato paste, garlic, and water. Bring to a boil, then lower the heat and simmer, uncovered, for 3-5 minutes, stirring constantly.

Add the vinegar, oil, honey, chili powder, and cumin, and simmer 20-25 minutes more, stirring occasionally. (TIP: Use a splatter screen to prevent burns and messes from hot sauce.) Add the Tabasco to taste, if desired.

Store sauce in a covered container, preferably glass, in the refrigerator. Sauce will keep up to two weeks.
