Tryall Golf Club in Montego, Jaimaica - a Dream Turned to Reality in the Caribbean

The Glory of Tryall Club, Jamaica

Jerrel D Smith
Lying at a distance of 12 miles on the western side of the Montego Bay airport, the Tryall Club is like walking into a dream. This 220-acre club was bought and now run by a group of shareholders and homeowners (some of them being the descendants of a bunch of Texans like Lloyd Bentsen and John Connally) in 1960s. The club boasts the Great House of 1800 and an artistic piece of golf course which is famed across the globe and retains a position among the top 10 golf courses, built with modern technology, in the Caribbean.

The Tryall Club hosted the golf Johnnie Walker World Cup since 1991 till 1995. Vacation villas, outdoor dining, swimming pools and entertainment areas are spread all across the estate. Speaking of the golf course, it was built by architect Ralph Plummer. The course routed along the coastline and went right up into the hills lying above the Great House. Loaded with tennis grounds, water sports, outdoor dining and children's program, the Tryall Club went through different renovations over the years. The major changes include the creation of the Great House villas, expansion and improvement of the Beach Terrace, implementation of a plan to keep the beach sand in place without any impact on the environment and many more.

Only a few years have galloped by when rental equipment and new shiny carts trotted out of the golf course. A practice green, measuring 8,000 square feet was opened with a new bunker for practice and also a range for second diving was opened which invites the players to hit the ball right into the sea. Many bunkers and tees were also renovated on the proper course. The already lush layout was planted with new flowering plants, many holes were replanted using tiff-eagle grass and were rebuilt.

The Tryall golf course is user friendly and you need not start a battle after a few holes! Simply enjoy the holes on the oceanfront and tee shot passing right through 18th century, fully functional water wheel stanchions. Remember that it is not easy always and you can get into trouble. The first trouble is the 4th hole par-3. You need a clean hit from an ocean-side tee to carry over across the River Flint right into a generous green slope. Next in line is the 5th hole requiring a rifle shot down a tree-line 200 yards chute to a good position in the dogleg to the left for an approach shot. Back nine is short but has enough tricks.

The Tryall course will require Caddies and you will always have their company. All in all, the Tryall Club is an all-encompassing entertainer where you can not only gather some great golfing experience but at the same time, enjoy the scenic Caribbean beauty during your holidays.
