Trying Things for the First Time

My Experience with the First Time Ever Using a Paddle Fishing Boat

Andrea Rowe
Yesterday, I returned fishing. When something goes bad, I have this horrible tendency to get back up again and try to make it better. This tendency is new for me. Normally I mope and groan but my husband has helped changed my way of viewing things. So, after everything in the world seemed to stop me from going fishing, I returned. I had a different goal in mind and a different plan.

I had the bag to carry items needed although I knew I would not need to walk down a trail. I had my sneakers on. I had my purse, bucket of worms, and was ready to start. I went into the main office to rent a boat.

Perhaps I have been over thinking the whole, "try something new" experience. Two men helped push the boat in the water and left. I was stuck at the dock. I could not figure out which way to use the paddles to get out into the water. With the help of two more men I managed it. Their inabilities to smile could not be hidden. It must have been pretty funny that a 32 year old woman couldn't steer a boat. Those men should have seen my driving a car. They would not have laughed then.

Anyway, I figured out how to work the boat but because the lake is shallow and there was wind, every time I put my pole in the water I found find myself brushed up against the bank. For two hours, I worked at using this boat. A problem here is that I have undergone a mastectomy. I have little muscle tissue left and in more than two years I have done nothing physically with my arms. Imagine Jell-O-yes, I know, disgusting picture but it is what my arms look like. Using these boats is difficult anyway but for someone with my problem it is very difficult.

So, I lost my $10 for the rental and went to the shore and fished where a school of perch proceeded to steal almost all my bait. I saw another turtle. I did catch four fish eventually although they could easily fit in a 30 gallon aquarium. I now make the vow never to fish again-or at least until this sunburn from last Saturday heals. It means I can spend more time looking at Associated Content articles and working on the family history book I have been planning for my uncle. Those activities are safe. This morning my arms are very sore and my back is beat red but I DID learn to maneuver that boat!
