Tuesday Morning? - DON'T BOTHER!

Store Review - Find Something Better to Do on Tuesday Morning

Carolyn Blevins
I'm a sucker for a good deal probably more so than most folks. Yes, I'll stand in line at 6 AM in front of Wal-Mart if the day-after-Thanksgiving sale is right. I'll go after promo codes and search out discount coupons online as though I were searching for the Holy Grail. So earlier this week, after seeing one too many commercials for Tuesday Morning ("..Should've been here last week; better get here this week.." claims Lauren Bacall's voiceover), my husband did a little online research and discovered that there's a Tuesday Morning store two cities over from us and we made a date to visit.

Now I'm a hardy veteran of discount stores and I understand that during the busy holiday season, some stores (yes, even more upscale stores) can look a bit shabby around the edges if the store associates are busy or short-handed. But what I saw at Tuesday Morning was beyond belief! The store was so ratty, disorganized and picked over that it looked like a public market in a third-world country. Go to your local KMart, Dollar Tree, 99 cent Only store, Goodwill or even a garage sale and you'll find more pleasant surroundings. And overall, the merchandise is shoddy. You'll find better quality items, again, at your local dollar store. Were there good buys? I guess...who could tell? There appeared to be a couple of name brand appliances here and there if you don't mind dinged up boxes (which is perfectly fine), but is it worth a special trip for the off-chance you 'might' find the great buy? I don't think so. Better off sticking with Big Lots, where you'll find a LOT of great deals on name brand items as well as a store filled with great everyday buys and some semblance of order. I kid you not; It takes a LOT for me to back down from a store which may carry the Buy-Of-The-Year but my first instinct upon walking into the store was to turn around and walk back out. Yes, no exaggeration, it was THAT BAD!

The store we visited, located at 1824 Marron Road in Carlsbad, California, is about a quarter mile away from a Westfield Mall, in a shopping center which also contains an Olive Garden, Soup Plantation, credit union, Dollar Tree, Lenscrafters, Marshalls and such. The neighborhood isn't downtrodden; in fact, it's the major shopping area in the Oceanside/Carlsbad area. Given its location, I would expect much more from the management of this Tuesday Morning store than the trashy way they're allowing their store to be presented to the public. Even if this store were located in a less-advantageous, less economically blessed neighborhood, there would be no excuse. The company has an appealing, attractive website; they have Lauren Bacall as a spokesperson. They need to take some of that implied class and taste and carry it through to their brick-and-mortar store locations.

My opinion? Stay in bed Tuesday morning. Lauren Bacall should be ashamed of herself.

Sorry you were so miserable with your shopping experience. To bad, so sad for you! I love Tuesday Morning. Don't be a follower @ let these trashy reviews influence you. Try Tuesday Morning for yourself. If you have a bad store in your area you really need to contact the franchise. Don't trash the company!!!!!!!!!

I love Tuesday Morning - All the stores I frequented in Southern California were up to par and offered many unique and beautiful things. The one you went to sounds like it needed some good management to keep things straight in line. Other than that, Big Lots does not offer the same caliber items that Tuesday Morning does. What a hearty laugh I had at that statement. Cheers

I am an inveterate Tuesday Morning shopper, and have 3 Tues. AM stores within 6 miles of my house in Denver which I frequent.

I would say that Chad is right--in my experience, they all have different states of attractiveness and organization, and these seem to be determined to a large degree by when you are shopping.

You couldn't have gone at a worse time, though--NONE of them look very good at the end of December, just before closing for the month of January to reorganize and restock. The hordes of holiday bargain hunters always strip those stores bare in December. The harried employees, who are faced throughout Nov. and early Dec. with the influx of tons of merchandise to stock, little extra storage, and the general holiday shopping mayhem, probably don't feel a lot of incentive to straighten things up then as they know they have a month ahead of them to get the job done before reopening in February.

I would not write off all Tuesday Morning stores. They do have fabulous

I have shopped at Tuesday Morning for over 20 years and always find "treasures". One of a kind pieces at unbelievably great prices. In fairness I think you should visit another store before making such a harsh critism. They don't sell Baccarat at Big lots or Denby, Limoges, 1000 thread count Italian sheets or many, many of the other finer appointments that TM carries. You can't find them at the mall, Walmart, or fleamart for that matter. But, you better get there at 8:00 a.m. when they have their monthly advertised sale because at their prices, supplies don't last long. Sounds like you may have arrived a day late.

I work at a Store located in Pennsylvania and we have a very neat and clean and organized store. Our district manage has taken pictures and loves the state of the store. Our loyal Tuesday Morning shoppers tell us about other Tuesday Morning stores that are in the condition that the article states, but go on to tell us that we have a beautifully organized store. I guess it really depends if the employees care or not. I, for one, cannot stand disorganization. Happy shopping!

So true and so sad! Believe it or not, Tuesday Morning used to carry beautiful items and really great deals. However, no two stores carry the exact same merchandise, so you may still find a store or two with some great buys, I know I have. Great piece.

Thanks for the tip--I was almost sucked in by the commercial myself! Good writing voice, by the way...
