Tumescent liposuction was the invention of the American eighties. Tumescent liposuction involves, injecting large quantities of liquid into a target area. These fluids are agents that numb the pain and shrink blood vessels. Because the procedure uses lidocaine it eliminates the need to go under general anesthesia which is where most of the dangers of surgery come from. Also, because epinephrine is used to shrink blood vessels, blood loss is not a serious problem.
The second side effect of these medications is actually quite beneficial to the surgery. The fluids injected into the fat tissue make the fat firm and swollen. It is easier to remove the swollen and firm fat, thus the complications are reduced for tumescent liposuction.
This does not mean that this is not a dangerous procedure. With all plastic surgeries it comes with its serious and not so serious risks. It is common after the tumescent liposuction is performer for people to have bruising and scars. It is also not entirely uncommon for people to report bruising, and scarring. Topping the list of potential superficial problems with the surgery is lumpy looking skin because there is excess skin if too much fat is removed.
Even though the large amounts of chemicals used in the procedure is one of the benefits of the procedure and is what gives it its name as tumescent, however it can also lead to a massive amount of problems. Sometimes the chemicals that are injects are of a too high concentration and because of this the patient gets lidocaine toxicity. It is even possible that the surgeon will inject too much into the target area and it will accumulate in your lungs. These are both serious problems.
What is needed to reduce the risk of complications is getting someone who is experienced enough as a surgeon to be able to instill confidence. Spend a large amount of time reviewing surgeons, and make sure you read reviews of their practice on line before signing your life away over to them
