Tunnel to Towers Run
Neighborhood: Lower Manhattan
NY, NY Manhattan
On September 11, 2001, 34-year old FDNY Firefighter Stephen Siller, who was off duty at the time in Brooklyn, saw the Twin Towers ablaze. Immediately, he ran through the Battery Park Tunnel to the World Trade Center site, where he gave up his life in the service of others.

To commemorate this sacrificial act, on the last Sunday in September, thousands of runners and walkers retrace his footsteps by participating in the Firefighter Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Run. This 5K race/walk has grown into a weekend long celebration that brings New York City area residents, police officers, members of the military and the international firefighting community together to commemorate 9-11 and celebrate the lives of these fallen heroes. During the race, 343 firefighters from across the country participate in The Brother for Brother Firefighter Remembrance Program by carrying a banner containing a picture of one of the 343 fallen firefighters. These firefighters are interspersed inside the tunnel with members of the FDNY holding American flags.

Following this annual race is a block party featuring awards, food, and entertainment following the race. Race participants and interested volunteers can also join in a pre-race mass and pasta dinner on the Saturday before the race.

Proceeds from the Tunnel to Towers Run are donated to "Let Us Do Good Foundation." Since Stephen was father of five children and himself orphaned by the age of ten, his family created the "Let Us Do Good" Children's Foundation, an organization dedicated to continue Stephen's caring spirit and love for children by improving the lives of children who have lost one or more parents or have other special needs. Currently, the charity is raising money for Stephen's House, a state-of-the art childcare center that will be part of the New York Foundling Hospital.

I ran this race today, it's not only a good cause but one of the most memorable races I've run (and I've done hundreds). You run from Brooklyn to Manhattan through the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel, part of which is lined by FDNY members with American flags cheering on the runners. The race ends by Ground Zero with a big outdoor party with a live band and plenty of free food from sponsors. And the money goes to a great cause.

This has become one of my favorite races in NYC.
