Turin Brakes' JackInABox : Good Driving Music

Erin McMaster
Turin Brakes is a folk-pop duo hailing from South London. They have been compared to bands like Coldplay, Travis and the Kings of Convenience.

Recorded in their Brixton studio, a previous horse stable with fellow musicians Basement Jaxx living upstairs, JackInABox is Turin Brakes' third full-length album. It is an album that elicits the lure of the open road but somehow manages to miss the intimacy of their first EP, The Optimist. But the album does show a depth that other contemporaries continually miss.

The acoustic guitar work is masterful with melodies that will strike you with the vintage harmonies. JackInABox has stylistic differences with jazzier beats, folk tunes, and upbeat pop songs throughout this crisp production. This album definitely has more of a rock vibe than their previous work and it shows that this duo has been flexing their creative muscles.

While the two-guys-with-their-guitars-sound is part of their charm, it is their laid back and enjoy life attitude that many fans enjoy. And you certainly have that on this Turin Brakes album. It is refreshing to have bands that produce happy songs as their form of escapism as opposed to the existential angst of so many other bands.

JackInTheBox is the type of album that makes a drive in the country with the windows down perfect.
