Week 12 - Besiktas Break Into Top 3 as Galatasaray Keep Pace With Fenerbahce
Galatasaray 2 - 0 Sivasspor
After a being upset in the Turkish Super Lig by city rivals Fenerbahce last week, Galatasaray had some ground to make up. Returning to the Ali Sami Yen stadium against a poor performing Sivasspor was expected to be an easy win. Though the injury of starting striker Milan Baros along with the suspension of in-form Abdul Kader Keita and Elano Blumer showed hope for Sivasspor.
The joy started early for Galatasaray in Week 11 of the Turkish Super Lig as Shabani Nonda opened the scoring in the 11th minute following a slick heel pass by Baris Ozbek. Nonda was left one-on-one with Sivasspor goalkeeper, Michael Petkovic, and made no mistakes, slotting it neatly around the keeper.
Petkovic was called for holding the ball in is hands for too long in the 45th+1st minute, giving Galatasaray a freekick from the edge of the area. Harry Kewell blasted it into the top of the netting giving Petkovic no chance and giving Galatasaray a 2-0 lead in the 11th Week of the Turkish Super Lig.
Galatasaray created a few more dangerous opportunities to score but were unable to increase the lead. Sivasspor showed no signs of threat as Galatasaray cruised on to take the victory.
Kayserispor 1 - 1 Fenerbahce
Coming off a big victory against Galatasaray in last weeks Super Lig fixtures, Fenerbahce were unable to hold onto their 5 point lead at the top of the table. With today's score, Fenerbahce show how important their captain Alex is to this team, as he was out injured.
In the 20th minute, Fenerbahce took the lead with a surprise goal from Cristian Baroni. Cristian took a chance from 35+ yards out, a shot which took a bounce off the wet floor and hit Kayserispor goalkeeper, Souleymanou Hamidou, in the head before heading toward the goal-line. Souleymanou claimed to have cleared the ball before it crossed into the goal but the referee disagreed.
Fenerbahce played decent in the first half but after a powerful strike from Mehmet Topuz blasted off the side post, they would not see much of the ball. Kayserispor took control of the game and scored in the 70th minute through Cangele's penalty kick. The pressure kept coming and the Turkish Super Lig leaders could not do anything to stop them. Following multiple saves from Volkan Demirel in the last minutes of the game, Fenerbahce coach Christoph Daum admitted that Fenerbahce had played poorly saying, "We did not lose 2 points today, we earned 1."
Kayserispor have to be pleased with their performance against the league leaders but will be disappointed not to take home the win.
Besiktas Rallying Up the Table
Besiktas continue to climb up the Turkish Super Lig ladder with a well earned 1-0 victory against Ankaragucu. Ismail Koybasi's long range effort gave Besiktas the lead in the 16th minute after taking a deflection off of Ankaragucu defender, Elyasa. Besiktas controlled the rest of the game and should have increased their lead. They will leave happy though, going into their Champions League game against Wolfsburg with a comfortable home win.
