Almost anything can be used as a planter outside. Any material, and almost any shape. As long as it has some room for the dirt and the plants, it can be used! The main thing you want to make sure you do when using an unusual container, it make sure it has drainage holes. You can put holes in just about anything with a drill and the right bit.
I like to use old wicker baskets. You can make a liner for the baskets with a garbage bag. Just cut the bag to the size of the inside of the container, and staple it to the basket. Poke a few holes in the bottom, and viola, instant container.
My favorite things to use are the more unusual ones. I turned an old radio flier wagon into a planter. I drilled a few holes in the bottom, added soil, and plants, and it's just beautiful. As the weather ages it, it looks better all the time! You can also use old twin bed frames. For those you can sometimes place pots between the bars, or you could also build a box to put under it, and have the flowers grow right through the bottom of the bed. Other great planters, are old metal buckets. They look beautiful full of flowers.
I have used old tree stumps, hollowed out as planter, even stuck succulents into rocks. Anything can be used as a planter. I have an old ladder in my backyard, which I grew a vine up. Old shoes make great planters. If you can imagine it, try it, you might be surprised at how lovely it looks stuffed with plants. I have used old metal colanders, which already have the drainage holes for you! You can even use old cookie jars, to do the drainage in glass, you can add a thin layer of rocks, or add broken Terra Cotta pot pieces on the bottom first. Either way, that will provide some drainage. If you are using glass, don't over water.
Once you have found your planter, make sure you have drainage holes, and you can even add a thin layer of small rocks on the bottom of the planter. Then get a good soil, with a lot of nutrients. They key to a beautiful planter is the flowers...and the abundance of them. Stuff your planter full of flowers. The more, the better! Don't worry about them not having room to grow. You can always re pot them when they get too big!
So take a look around, see what you can turn into a planter! The possibilities are endless, and it will add a great focal point to your yard and garden!
