Turn Your Goals Into Reality With Seven Simple Steps

Chris Gafner
Most people in life have goals, but very few actually know how to go about achieving them. Achieving your goals takes more than just hard work; you have to know the proper steps to take to turn a goal into reality. Here are seven steps that will help you attain any goal you put your mind to.

Step 1. Finding your goal

Ask your self if the goal you have in mind will be attainable, and sustainable. These two attributes are critical in finding a goal that you will follow through on. Many people set goals, but very few people follow through.

Step 2. Cleaning House

Remove distractions from your life before you start. It's hard to focus on achieving anything if you are surrounded by distractions. The actual practice of literally having a clean house is useful to help you focus on the things you really want to get done. Taking this a step further, you want to try to eliminate anything that holds you back. If you are distracted by the fact that you need to paint the house, then paint the house. Eliminate distractions and then your goal will have your undivided attention.

Step 3. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery

Study the paths of people who achieved similar goals before you. Look at your heroes. How did they achieve success? Looking at the stories of the successful often gives us a roadmap to success.

Step 4. Talk to an expert

Tap the resources around you. No one is an expert in their field when they are first starting out. Search out people who are knowledgeable about your goal and seek their input. For example, if your goal is to run the Chicago Marathon, seek out a proven marathon coach to guide you to success.

Step 5. Create a road map

How will you ever arrive at your destination if you leave without a map? Make out a plan that includes every step that you need to take to be successful. Include small checkpoint goals along the way. These small goals will help boost your confidence and keep motivation high.

Step 6. Find a support group

You are only as good the friends that you keep. Find other people who are trying to achieve similar goals to you. This group of friends that you keep can act as a support group that will help keep you accountable and on track. Make sure the friends that you keep are positive influences in your life, keeping negative people in your circle of friends will only detract you from what you are trying to accomplish.

Step 7. The Importance of Keeping Score

Creating a goal score card will help you stay focused and aware of your progress. Make a goal score card with the columns of goals, progress towards goals, notes, and goal due date. Fill out a new goal sheet every week keeping track of your process. This step alone is very powerful and will become the cornerstone of your successful.

Make sure that you follow each step in order. Eventually you will find that following these steps will help you to achieve not only big milestones, but also the small goals in your life. If you follow these steps through to completion you will have a strong chance of turning your goals into reality.
