Turner syndrome can be serious. Affected girls who aren't properly treated usually don't get taller than 4 feet 7 inches. If caught early, however, hormones can be administered to help growth.
Females with Turner syndrome also have problems with fertility. The condition prevents normal formation of the ovaries. Because of this, girls with Turner syndrome won't experience puberty normally without proper treatment.
This chromosomal condition can also cause high blood pressure, heart problems, kidney problems, diabetes, cataracts, hearing problems and thyroid problems. Some girls may even have learning difficulties.
There are a few physical characteristics that most girls with Turner syndrome have: a low hairline on the neck, extra folds of skin on the neck, droopy eyelids, abnormal bone development, differently shaped ears that sit low on the head and a large amount of moles (more than a person usually has).
Some girls are diagnosed with Turner syndrome at birth. Other times a girl may seem healthy until they reach the age of puberty and aren't developing properly. In either case, if Turner syndrome is suspected, a blood test is done to confirm. A karyotype (a specific type of blood test) counts chromosomes. After diagnosis, other tests are done to see if problems with organs exist.
Treatment may depend on what conditions a girl has in addition to Turner syndrome (like high blood pressure). Growth problems can be treated with growth hormones, but not every girl will respond well. This will also only give a few more inches.
To help a girl with Turner syndrome develop normally, estrogen therapy usually begins around the age of 12. This will help normal development occur during puberty. However, a female with this syndrome can still end up having difficulties conceiving. Donor eggs may be most helpful in this case.
Turner syndrome can be scary but it is manageable. It is entirely possible and likely for a girl to have an otherwise healthy life. Even the health conditions that may occur as a complication can be managed. Also, Turner syndrome is not genetic. It is believed to be a random occurrence of chromosomal abnormality.
