Turning a Blind Eye

A Poem

Etienne J. Sarfelli
Too busy to hear the screaming
and the crying of those in need
to hear the rumbling of empty stomachs
Turning a blind eye to news reports
of crashing buildings and people perishing beneath the rubble.
Too preoccupied with my own needs and wants
to be aware that some people need things that I take for granted.
But the devastation in Haiti is hard to ignore
even for one so self absorbed
It's impossible to deny that something must be done
and that I must do my part
I cannot continue to turn a blind eye to a world that continues to suffer.
What I have to offer is not as much as some but still much more than many others
And if I follow the example of those who have already lent a hand
and then set an example of my own
maybe one day all people will have everything they need.
