Turning Point in Dexter Morgan's Life: an Ironic Twist to Season 4 Finale
Dexter Realized that His Life is Fate
Every season of Dexter has held us all on our toes to see what Dexter Morgan will do next, but it was this season that truly kept us on edge awaiting the final breath that the Trinity Killer (Arthur Mitchell) would take at the hands of Dexter. Who would have thought that the one person that Dexter truly loved and the person that made Dexter question his every thought and existence would end up dying at the hands of the serial killer he set out to eliminate from the very beginning of season four?
This season began with Dexter Morgan's new life of being a father and a husband all while maintaining his lifestyle of blood spatter analyst and serial killer. With a surprising re-introduction of now retired FBI Agent Frank Lundy brought into character Dexter's new objective, The Trinity Killer.
The Trinity Killer was, like Dexter, a father and husband that had another side to his life. The Trinity Killer received his name from the fact that he was a serial that would kill in three's. Now killing for over three decades, the Trinity Killer would kill a young mother in a bathtub, make a women jump to their death, and brutally kill a man by bludgeoning. However, in later episodes it was brought to light that the Trinity Killer would kidnap and kill a ten year old boy five days before his Trinity Killings. During the season we learn through Kyle Butler (Dexter's friend alias) that Arthur Mitchell has a wife with three children. We also learn that Arthur Mitchell was a very religious man that helped others in society. There was a dark side to Arthur Mitchell that others did not see. Inside the home Arthur was a very forceful, mean, and sadistic father and husband that brought fear to his family. Dexter had to end Arthur Mitchell's life to keep him from hurting anyone else.
Throughout the season we find that Dexter is questioning himself on who he truly is and what he was born to do. Furthermore, we discover that Dexter is beginning to get careless where several times he set himself up for potential failure. His carelessness caused a tremendous amount of marital problems with Rita and work problems where he was absent from work and always in a rush to get to Trinity. In addition to the amazing and deathly twist at the end, Dexter's sister Debra Morgan learns who Dexter really is; the brother of the famed Ice Truck Killer from season one. This already in itself adds a gut wrenching moment for Dexter, because he now realizes the Deb knows who he really is, but it was the ending that makes you drop your jaw in awe and wonder what's next for Dexter in season five.
When it is all said and done, after a long conversation with Trinity on the cutting table, Dexter realizes that he is truly ready to give his all and be a good father and husband. He listens to his heart and knows how important Rita and his kids are to him and how he needs to show them more attention whilst living his other life as a serial killer. In fact, he even questions if being a serial killer is for him anymore and justifying giving the addiction he was born into up for his family. Then his life changed immediately, within minutes after eliminating Trinity. This is when Dexter, serial killer born in the blood of his mother, realizes that it isn't God but rather fate that rules what is next for him and his family's life.
The final season just aired and I am already excited and anxious to see what is next for Dexter in season five now that everything has changed.
