Turtle Point Golf in Kiawah Island, South Carolina
Playing at Turtle Point Golf Course, South Carolina, USA
Designed by Jack Nicklaus and opened in 1981, the Turtle Point Golf Course becomes a tighter place to play on compared to Ocean Course when the winds die, says Mark Schaffer, head pro of Turtle Point. Nicklaus who designed the course has been quite often called out for his previous work and this happened because he has a tendency to courses for the game of his own.
As per Schaffer, Turtle point was more in the line of Nicklaus' intentions. According to Schaffer, the course is tight with greens which are small and that is what the designer intended for and since Nicklaus was himself a shot-maker, he designed the holes in way that the players are required to hit shots which are high having soft fades because of the firm greens.
Jack Nicklaus cam back to the Turtle Point Golf Course to make some minor changes but the visit turned out to be a longer one with Nicklaus making some significant changes. According to Schaffer, the workout was quite funny as Nicklaus was called back just for re-doing the grass that the greens have but instead, the designer had to stay out there for a very long time.
Upon his return in 2000, Nicklaus made changes in the first green complex, changed the 10th and added tees to some of the holes. Some of the bunkers were taken out and some other were added. Additional run-off areas were added by Nicklaus and 17th green got revamped. A waste bunker was installed on No.14. Nicklaus made these changes after thinking a lot. The architect thinks that muscle power is overruled by brain power and he wanted the players to think the same way he does.
It is true that you need not a driver each hole at Turtle Point Golf Course but still it retains the title of being one among the longest courses on this island! What you actually need is a great deal of accuracy to fit in this course. So, if you are a newbie, ripen your skills on some easy course and then hit the Turtle Point.
