Learn About Starting a Tutoring Business

JB Robbins
Today everyone is looking for a way to make a decent living. If you are a baby boomer looking for a new career option, of if you want to start your own business, then consider translating your years of experience into a profitable business that offers tutoring services. To determine if this is the right business choice for you, it is a good idea to learn about starting a tutoring business.

Evaluate Your Qualifications

Before you start any type of business you first need to decide if you have the qualifications for that business. To run a tutoring service successful you need expertise in at least one area, you need to know how to break down skills and concepts and you need to have patients. People that do well as tutors include former teachers, former professors, former business executives and former coaches.

Select Your Tutoring Business' Niche

To enhance the chances that your business is going to be successful you need to focus your tutoring business on your areas of expertise. For example, if you were an elementary school teacher before you retired, then your tutoring business can focus on tutoring subjects and grade levels normally associated with grades K through 5. On the other hand, if you were a business executive, then you can focus your tutoring services on things like business writing, GRE or GMAT test prep or even on IT for businesses.

Create a List of Tutoring Services

The next step is to create a list of tutoring services that you are capable of delivering. For example, you may want to offer introduction to Spanish and intermediate Spanish tutoring, or you may want to offer pre-algebra and algebra tutoring services. The key here is to select services that you have credentials to back up. Potential clients are going to compare your credentials to the services that you offer to determine if you are qualified to tutor them.

Create a Tutoring Schedule

The fourth step is to set up your tutoring service schedule. You can set up a block schedule, where students can select a block of time to work with you, or you can set up an open schedule where you are available to students between certain hours or on certain days. If you plan on offering online tutoring services, then you will need to post your available hours and information on how to reserve a time slot on your home page or services page.
