Tuxedo Cat facts and tidbits:
Tuxedo cats are sometimes called "Jellicle" cats. The name comes from T.S. Elliot's "Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats: The Song of the Jellicles"
The coloring and coat pattern of a Tuxedo cat:
The Cat Fanciers Association describes Tuxedo cats as black and white cats "...with white paws, chest, and belly". Some have white on the face as well.
Some people call other color variations "Tuxedo cats" and that is fine. But a true Tuxedo cat is not just a black and white cat.
The Personality of a Tuxedo cat:
Cat temperament is part nature and part nurture. In other words a cat's personality will come from a mixture of the cat's genes as well as how the cat is raised--how much he is handled and in what manner, for instance. All the Tuxedo cats I have ever known--my own and the cats of others--have had several things in common. They tend to be friendly (as is true with all cats, they are more friendly when they have been spayed/ neutered) and active. They are vocal--much more vocal than a Persian, but much less vocal than a Siamese.
My experience with Tuxedo cats
As I stated earlier, I am one of those cat lovers who adore these "Jellicle cats" or "Tuxedo cats". My love for these cats began with a tiny kitten I adopted. Morrigan, my first Tuxedo cat, was with me for 14 years. Unfortunately she developed cancer and left this world in November of 2005.
After I lost Morrigan I thought I'd never have a Tuxedo cat again. She was one of a kind and I still miss her greatly.
However, that following spring a neighborhood stray deposited a litter of kittens in my yard. All were Tuxedo cats. I told myself I would find all of them new homes. I took them to a vet, got them spayed and neutered one by one and fell in love with them. The cats, Mr. Spock, Isabella, and Kiley, are still with me.
Both pedigreed and non-pedigreed cats can have Tuxedo markings-but no matter the pedigree, or lack of, they are they are perfect in the eyes of Tuxedo cat lovers.

Post a CommentI have a beautiful ten year old male tuxedo cat. He is a classic with all the true markings. He is sweet, intelligent, vocal, and a real character. His name is Buddy and I wish I could keep him forever!
My Tuxedo cat, Harvey, was the sweetest friend I've ever had. He adored me and would sit on my lap, lean back on my chest and pat my face with his paw. There were times when he would look into my eyes for close to an hour. He tolerated everyone but only trusted me. He passed away on Sept. 21, 2010, from cancer and now rests in my flower garden. I still cry for him and I'm not sure I'll ever stop missing him.
I have grown up with tuxedo cats and have fallen in love with their looks and personalities. When I moved out on my own I was determined to adopt a male tuxedo. I now have "Otis". He truly is one of my best friends! Cutest ball of fur ever :-).
We have a 6 month old male tuxedo named Puck. We adopted him from the humane society. He is the sweetest kitty in the whole world. :)

...and am tempted to look for another kitten as close to her as I can find, but I probably ought to wait a few weeks. I just miss Molly so darn much!
PLEASE watch after your kitty. When I let my 1-year-old Molly, a Tuxedo polydactyl, out I usually rounded her up and brought her back in after 3-4 hours of outside playing. Last week I went looking for her and didn't find her anywhere. I was busy with other things and gave up looking, went back inside to my chores. Later that evening I looked for a bit and then had to go collect my wife at the airport. Next morning we looked around again several times. I took a flyer with a couple of pics to the neighbors. That night a neighbor called and told us her husband, a Count Sheriff Deputy, had seen her on the road dead the evening before. I went looking and never found a body, but "roadkill" never lasts overnight here in our rural area, I figure some critter pulled her off the road and had a nice meal.
Molly was a very special little cat. My wife said she had observed that there was a unique (to me, anyways) and special bond between Molly & me. I miss her terribly and am tempt
I have a now 8 year old tuxedo cat, I took her on a couple of years ago, when her old owners couldn't have her anymore. She is the most intelligent cat I have ever met! She knows how to hunt and regularly leaves presents at my feet. She can climb vertually anything and although sounding very independent, she loves her cuddles. She is a very amusing and adorable character!
My Tuxedo cat was named Babydoll Applepie. She was the sweetest thing on this Earth. She loved to drink from facets, came when her named was called, slept next to me every night and knew how to communicate with me. We had a system worked out for when she wanted food, water, treats, or to go out side. She loved to play with plastic bags, plastic balls with those bells inside them, and lazer pointers. Funny thing about her was she only went into heat a few time before she stopped showing signs therefore allowing me the luxury of not having her spaded. Her favorite places were her bed (a old 7up crate with a towel placed for padding) next to the large windows and a box that she took over one day. I had her well-trained to not get into the cabinets or jump onto the tables. She loved eating grass. Sadly, my next door neighbor murdered her after a dispute and left her dead for me to find. Of course I can't prove this since I didn't witness the act but the circumstantal evidence is overwhelmi
My Tuxedo, Brice, is mixed with Siamese. He is crazy and constantly getting into trouble. When we try to get mad at him, he just poses and looks at us or plops himself on one of our laps. He's just too cute for our own good.
