Raines is the story of an LAPD detective Michael Raines, who has a very vivid imagination. In a job related incident, Raines loses his partner and best friend. He takes time off to see a psychiatrist and heal his wounds from the tragedy because it seems he can now see dead people.
The twist on the show is that the dead people he sees are not real ghosts like on Ghost Whisperer and Medium. They live only in his imagination, and the victims help him to focus on the case in a way we haven't yet seen until now. They can't help him solve the case because they only exist in his head, so they only know what he knows. Raines is well aware that the murder victims he is seeing are just an extension of his mind, and is the first to admit that he might be just a little off.
When it first begins happening to him, the hallucinations lead him to believe he is losing his mind, but as the constantly changing figments of his imagination help lead him to the killer, he finds that it may not be so bad after all. It is a struggle for him to accept this strange or burdensome gift and merge it with his working as well as personal life.
As Raines learns more about the victims, they shift and change according to his perception of them as he uncovers the layers of the lives they have left behind. It is interesting to see how the dress and manner of the victims change as he finds out secrets that the victims probably never intended anyone to know.
