TV Shows with Hollywood's Hottest Fictional Sisters

"Sisters" and "Charmed"

"Sisters" aired on NBC from May 11, 1991 to May 4, 1996. This drama centered on the Reed sisters, who lived in Winnetka, Illinois. Their deceased father, a doctor, was a workaholic who was never around. Since he clearly wanted boys, he named his daughters Alexandra (or "Alex"); Theodora (or "Teddy"); Georgianna (or "Georgie"); and Francesca (or "Frankie").

These sexy sisters were played by well-known Hollywood actresses Swoozie Kurtz, Sela Ward, Patricia Kalember, and Julianne Phillips. Alex was the oldest sister. Married twice, her first marriage was to a wealthy, cross-dressing plastic surgeon (played by David Dukes). Her second marriage was to Big Al (played by Robert Klein). Next, we have Teddy, the free-spirited fashion designer and recovering alcoholic. When Teddy's ex-husband married her sister, Frankie, she was livid. To make matters worse, their only daughter, Cat, was raped, while attending college.

Georgie was the most level-headed of the entire bunch. She was a responsible, stay-at-home mom, with an on-again, off-again real estate career. She was also the trusted confidant and seemed to have the perfect life with loving husband, John (played by Garrett M. Brown). That is, until their son, Evan, developed leukemia. Even though Evan recovered, her marriage did not recover from the test of time. Georgie and John later divorced.

Youngest sister, Frankie, was a workaholic businesswoman, who suffered from infertility. After marrying Teddy's ex-husband, Mitch, they finally became surrogates to a baby. Thanks, of course, to her sister, Georgie. But, her successful career eventually put too much of a strain on her marriage and she eventually left her marriage and the show for Japan.

This show worked because it focused on real world issues and the ups and downs of a dysfunctional family. Even though they had problems, when push came to shove, they were always there for each other.

"Charmed" aired on the WB television network from October 7, 1998 to May 21, 2006. This Aaron Spelling production was a hit from the word "go." The supernatural drama focused on the Halliwell sisters, Prue, Piper, Phoebe, and later, Paige. Notice all the ladies' names begin with the letter "P?" Well, these lovely sisters appeared to be normal but they were known as "The Charmed Ones." This means their destiny was to do battle with evil beings like demons, warlocks, etc., so they could protect the innocent. Each sister had their own, distinct magical power. Living in San Francisco, they had to keep their paranormal identities as good witches separate and secret from their everyday lives.

The premiere episode entitled, "Something Wicca This Ways Comes," drew in 7.70 million viewers. Their story always centered on the Power of Three, where the three sisters combined their powers to strengthen their craft and to effectively win their battle against their evil opponents. Remember the old saying, "There is strength in numbers." Sadly, during a fight against evil, their oldest sister, Prue, was killed. Suddenly, long-lost half sister, Paige Matthews showed and filled the vacancy. She was very unique, since she was half-witch, half-whitelighter.

Hence, these sexy sisters were played by talented, Hollywood actresses Shannen Doherty, Holly Marie Combs, Alyssa Milano, and Rose McGowen. And, what really made this show work was that the real world issues these sisters still had to deal with such as relationships, careers, marriage, childbirth, sickness, and death. Not to mention the theme song, "How Soon Is Now?" by Love Spit Love.

"Sisters" received eight Emmy Award nominations but only won one in 1994 for Sela Ward as Best Lead Actress. Also, "Charmed" was considered the longest running hour-long television series with an all-female lead.

I loved both of these shows. I still watch Charmed re-runs. Wish they would come up with more shows like these and less reality.
