'Twas the Right Name for Christmas

A Christmas Poem

Sheryl Young
'Twas the right name for CHRISTmas
Though try as they might,
To mark with an "X" -
His name out of sight.

Most people are searching for things to believe,
Their doubts and their fears or their pain to relieve.
A hole that is empty; they know it or not,
One love that can cleanse every dark staining spot.

But the power is not in the trees or the lights,
Or even the gifts we exchange on that night.
Not the stockings we hang nor the clothes that we wear
Can replace the child lain in the manger with care.

Would it not be something if Santa we heard
Saying "Ho, Ho - I too believe in the Word!
How do folks think I can get everywhere
Without the help of my God and a prayer?"

There may be no star as a sign overhead;
The faith in our own hearts must be there instead.
For God gave us Jesus and He's the real peace
That our world is seeking this chaos to cease.

Today it looks as if Christ is crossed out, but actually X is the Greek sign for Christ which is how Xmas started. But what "used to be" is not "what is". So I don't use it and decry it along with everyone else!

This was a great poem. I also think it's wrong for people to use X-mas during the Christmas season.

Great poem and great sentiments. I, too, had heard of the supposed meaning of the "X" in Xmas, but to me it still just indicates leaving Christ out of Christmas.

Sheryl, great poem. I've been away from Associated Content for a few weeks now, as I moved from Oklahoma to Massachusetts. I've been pretty busy, but I'm back on now. I'm putting together a video of the drive back to Mass. with my wife and two dogs, and it should be up sometime around Christmas.
