Tween Girl Birthday Party Idea: Costume Party

Sally Albright
My tween daughter's birthday is coming up soon and we have been discussing themes for her birthday. One of the themes that my tween girl has come up with is a costume party. While tween girls may be too old to play dress up, a costume party is a more grown up version of dress up play suitable for tween girls. Interested in throwing a costume birthday party for your tween girl? I have some ideas to help you throw a fun costume party for your tween's birthday.

What are some Costume Party theme ideas for a tween girl's birthday party?

There are many different themes you can use for your tween daughter's costumed birthday party. When selecting a choice make the final decision a joint one with your tween daughter. Here are some fun theme ideas for your tween girl's costume party.

High School Musical: Your tween and her friends can dress up as characters from Disney's High School Musical television movie. Some High School Musical characters to choose from for your tween daughter and her friends include Sharpay, Gabriella, and Taylor.

Pop Star: Another theme idea for your tween daughter's costume party is to have your tween and her friends dress up as pop stars or "divas". The tween girls can dress in star glasses, feathered boas, and funky hats.

Halloween Costume: Halloween costumes often get worn once and then thrown into storage. Give your tween daughter and her friends the excuse of wearing their Halloween costumes again by hosting a Halloween costume party for your tween's birthday. This themed costumed birthday party can work well for tween girls whose birthdays fall near Halloween.

Costume Jewelry: Another fun idea for a costume party for your tween girl's birthday party is to host a "costume" jewelry party. Costume jewelry is often inexpensive and easy to come by, try searching your local Goodwill or other thrift stores. When your tween daughter's birthday party guests arrive let them all try on pieces of costume jewelry, allowing each girl to keep one item of jewelry to double as their take home gift. You can also provide other costume dress up pieces to go along with the jewelry such as plastic sunglasses, funky belts, and stick on nails.

Sports Athletes: A sports themed costume party can be a great option to consider for your tween daughter if she loves to be active. Your tween daughter and her friends can come to the party dressed up as athletes from different sports such as tennis players, football players, soccer players, and basketball players. If your tween is on a sports team she can come to the party dressed in her sports uniform.

What type of activities can the tween girls engage in at a costumed birthday party?

Wearing costumes to a costume party can be a lot of fun, but you will still need to find some activities to keep the tween girls entertained. Here are some options for activities your tween and her friends can have fun with that pertain to each theme listed above.

High School Musical Costume Party: A High School Musical Costume Party can be a lot of fun for the tween girls. When thinking about different activities for the High School Musical themed party try to keep the movie itself in mind. Take the "musical" part of the movie for instance. Your tween daughter and her friends can sing karaoke by singing songs from the movie. If you don't own or can't find a karaoke machine to borrow the tween girls can simply sing along to a High School Musical c.d. using makeshift microphones such as hairbrushes or wooden spoons. Another idea for activities for a High School Musical party is to host a talent competition for the tween girls. Let the tween girls be the contestants and the audience. After the talent competition is over you can hand out awards to all of the talent show participants.

Pop Star Costume Party: A Pop Star Costume Party can produce many fun ideas for birthday party activities. Like the High School Musical Costume Party, you can host a karaoke singing competition as well as a talent show competition. Other ideas for activities for your tween's Pop Star birthday party include Pop Star makeovers, dancing to their favorite pop music, decorating and eating star cookies, and hosting a Pop Star look-a-like contest.

Halloween Costume Party: When planning a Halloween Costume Party you can choose activities that you would normally do at a Halloween party. Popular Halloween party activities include bobbing for apples, costume contest, dancing to Halloween music, and more. To decorate your Halloween Costume Party for your tween inexpensively when their birthday is not around Halloween you can purchase clearance Halloween decorations after Halloween is over and save them to use at your tween girls birthday party.

Costume Jewelry Costume Party: Tween girls can have fun making their own jewelry at a costume jewelry costumed birthday party. You can find many jewelry making kits for sale at craft or retail stores. Tween girls can have fun making earrings, necklaces, and bracelets using different beads and strings. The tween girls can take their creations home with them after the party. Another fun idea is to place the costume jewelry in a jewelry box and hide it somewhere in the house. You can draw up a map of your house and mark the jewelry box's location with a red X, such as on a treasure map. You can include pit stops set up with activity stations along the way to prolong the fun. You can have a station for painting nails, a station for making jewelry, a station with a board game, etc.

Sports Athletes Costume Party: For a Sports Athletes Costume Party the obvious choice of activity would be to engage your tween and her friends in a sports game. A game of kickball, soccer, basketball, baseball, or softball can all be played in your backyard or on a nearby sports field or basketball court. Another idea would be to buy jewelry making beads that come in the form of sports equipment and balls to create fun sports jewelry for your tween's birthday party guests to take home with them.

Hosting a costume party for your tween girl's birthday can be a load of fun when using one of the themes listed above. Let your tween daughter help you pick out a theme and plan the costumed birthday party.
