Tweety Bird's Birthday

Tweety Bird's First Appearance Nov. 21, 1942

On Nov. 21, 1942 Tweety Bird made his first appearance in the Warner Brothers cartoon titled "A Tale of Two Kitties". Tweety is a fictional Yellow Canary in the Warner Bros. Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies series of animated cartoons.

In his cartoon debut of "A Tale of Two Kitties" he appeared with two animated hungry cats named Babbit and Catstello. The two cats, Babbit and Catstello were named after the popular and famous comedy team of Abbott and Costello. Bob Clampett created the Tweety Bird character. The name Tweety was not used until after his second appearance. Tweety was originally not a domestic canary, but simply a generic and wild baby bird living in an outdoors nest. He was far more aggressive and tart, then the later, more well-known version of him as a sweet, somewhat ornery, yellow canary living with Granny, his owner. Granny, seen in many of Tweety's films, is a sweet, nice grandma until Sylvester comes around, to eat her little Tweety, in which Tweety is heard to exclaim
his famous line, "I tawt I taw a puddy tat. I did, I did see a puddy tat!"

Tweety, also known as Tweety Bird and Tweety Pie, appeared in 48 cartoons and is best known for his famous line , "I tawt I taw a puddy tat. I did, I did see a puddy tat." The name "Tweety" is a play on words, as it originally meant "sweetie", along with "tweet" being a typical English word for the way a bird sounds when singing. He was not called by his name Tweety until after his second appearance.

In 1947 Tweety joined up with his famous opponent Sylvester, the puddy tat, and the two were so successful that they were featured in 39 cartoons together between 1947 and1964, acquiring two Academy Awards for "Tweetie Pie" and "Birds Anonymous" (1957) and three Oscar Nominations.

Commonly thought of as a girl bird, Tweety is really a boy. Granny refers to her pets as my boys. And, in the 1949 cartoon of "Bad Ol' Putty Tat", Sylvester manages to temporarily lure Tweety with a fake female canary (actually, oneof his fingers with a hat and painted-on eyes).

Happy Birthday, Tweety!

Gotta love Tweety! I didn't know he had been with Grannie Sweet so long. I guess the Puddy Tat took all of the attention.
